Reaper of Souls Legendary Item Gallery #1

Players not in the Reaper of Souls beta, and even those of us who are lucky enough to be there, have a great hunger to view the legendary items and consider their upgrade ramifications. I posted a few I’d found in previous updates, but thanks to some collecting by site reader Kaydee we’ve got a whole bunch more. Here are a couple of samples, because big numbers.

Click through to see the whole Reaper of Souls Legendary Item Gallery. Right now there are 37 screens of legendaries, all dropped at lvl 70 for the proper end game analysis. (I’ve got lots of pics of them at <70 level but since the same items scale up when found later, it's not as informative. Hence all lvl 70s here.) Some are awesome, some are so-so, and some have bugged names since the code strings aren't all updated yet, but no worries because BETA!If you've got more legendaries that aren't pictured here, let us know and we'll get them added, or put them into a later post. Insert links into comments or you can email me the links ([email protected]) or shots directly and we'll news them up for all to see.

Update: We have added a second gallery of Legendaries.

  1. To my surprise, these legendaries – and the ones I’ve seen on other sites – are actually terribly unimpressive.

Not because the new legendary effects aren’t cool – some of them look amazing – but because everything else about all but a few of them is horribly bland. They are all “The default nice stats for this item in the standard quantities you find on every rare, with _one_ extra thing on there in orange.

Sure, if those extra things are good enough, they can get away with that, but we are actually _loosing_ a lot of what made for fun legendaries in D3, let alone D2: items that have a bunch of stats you cannot normally get in that slot, or ranges that are unusual; items that have a theme through all of it; Items that suck in conventional regards, but have such interesting extra stuff that you could still consider using them.

These things we see here are not fleshed out legendary items, they’re random rares with one shiny thing tacked on. No matter how shiny the thing is, it doesn’t make for an interesting item, it makes for an interesting shiny thing, with the item itself being an afterthought.

    • I agree wholeheartedly. I really hope they’re just not done with them yet and go the extra mile, because right now with some legendaries it even feels like they’re moving a step back. Take Ice Climbers for instance, they don’t have a socket now anymore…
Imo they should also go a bit more crazy with affixes, pretty much every single item, rare or legendary, has 4 primary stats 2 secondary stats. It’s ridiculously boring.

      • The expansion is just more of the same, in the end. Maybe it’s time people realize that instead of hoping things will get ‘fixed’. With this expansion, the divorce from the previous Diablo games will be complete.

      • I said it before and I’ll say it again. If you think this shit’s gonna change, you are delusional and should think again. This is it. More of the same shit along with the whole BS explanation prior to release of D3, courtesy of bashiok “errm guys the items on the webpage are work in progress”. yeah, fuck right.

    • They could do like in PoE, where character mechanics can be completely changed. For example, an item with “Doubles attack speed / You no longer crit” could allow some interesting builds, not just shiny additions.

      • Nope. We can’t ever have items that might make a player want to re-organise the rest of what they’re wearing (in your case, drop all their crit gear for something else) because it’s not casual-friendly. People aren’t allowed to min-max or even have to think about the items they’re wearing.

In D3, for all stats, affixes and effects, more is ALWAYS better.

    • Exactly what I was thinking. Legendary items should be either ridiculously good (and be true legendary) or be unique in ways that make you think about whether you want to equip it or not. Items that reduce fire resistance but at the same time increase cold damage done, an item that increases run speed by 50% but at the expense of your total armor cut in half. I had really high hope for the item systems but it doesn’t look promising so far. All items look more or less like the ones in Wow now – tailored to more or less a specific class with only a few different stat types and a gimmick here and there to make it interesting.

The stat inflation is getting ridiculous as well. I saw a movie of a guy killing things yesterday and you see 913437, 4636436, 453634 in the floating combat text.

But anyway, they have 5 more months to get it right. Their track record so far is quite bad, but you never know.

      • How about making a Legendary item, that when equipped, completely changes your appearance, in addition to the Extra Mod that helps game play? Like the old Trang Oul’s set did in D2 … but, more varied options.

A barb weapon that turns you into a Berzker permanently. Or, perhaps changes you into one of the Ancients or a goat man.

Perhaps give the chance that an item can be ethereal … so that it’s damage can be UBER in comparison to the already new uber weapons.

    • Much like with D3’s skill-rune and affix systems, the newest incarnation of legendary item quality seems to suffer from a ‘the more, the better’ mindset approach.

Brainstorming for a plethora of unique properties (which use recyclable art and coding …) certainly was a good start. But without much further thinking (certain properties that ususally don’t belong into certain slots, affix combinations that aren’t otherwise possible, etc.) going into item creation, or at least some kind of elimination process to single out the very best ideas, the result will be just another arbitrary, indistinguishable mass.

It seems, Blizzard do indeed keep failing to make generated content feel non-generic.

    • Frostlion. Remember that most of the people working on D3 and RoS are almost all programmers, this is why it is that way. Not every musician is good at making songs, they all think they do, but they don’t. This is also true for game programmers.

    • Time to weak up and realize, this is how legendaries will be. They are not changign it. THis is maximum of blizzards creativness. Booring and bland items.

So fucking funny, this is the reason of boa? of trade being banished? So I cant trade that , pets have +100% more attack speed ..oh shit zombie dogs gonna do 6% effective damage now! Too powerfull, must not be ableto trade this.

    • Don’t agree. This is not POE nor D2/LOD with it’s partially twisted itemization, it’s D3’s successor ROS. I like the way the devs were going from the beginning: Understandable, not too complex itemization, and the best hack & slash action on the market.

That being said, I’m sure D3X2 will add even more complexity to the game (through charms, 5th passive slot etc.), and then you have an even cooler itemization that is not out of whack like that in POE or D2/LOD (in its last patches).

    • Yes, they all suck, but that’s what I expected. A gimmick mod tacked onto bigger numbers of +Main Stat, +Vit, plus one or more of +Armor, +Resist All, +CC, +CD, +IAS… = nothing has changed.

      Garbage item system is garbage.

  2. Over 3-4k base damage, items giving 700+ to intelligence etc… Current builds with best items in RoS will be weaklings. Good for me that I didn’t invest in uber items on money AH.

    • It’s like they arent from the same company as WoW… and never heard of item level squish.

gogogoog big numbers that you can’t even read!!

    • i hope that the vanilla d3 items get shit!

      1. no more ah bullshit
      2. i want something new because the current game is not worth playing
      3. yeah good for us that we didnt use the rm ah

  3. Looking at the shields, the block amount seems to varies too instead of just the block chance, going to be tough finding that perfect shield.

  4. I like the new legendaries although I was promised the opportunity to use elite champion affixes. Where they now?

  5. What is the point of even having stats in the game when EVERY item gives you +900ish in your main stat?

    • Also big numbers does not makes things cooler. It just makes it harder to comprehend and adds to clutter.

I say divide stats by about 10.

  6. There is a bow in the game which has a chance to spawn a chicken!

If you want to see it in action:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB0CHNvV0VU&feature=c4-overview&list=UUho-XTOszUf8vxjy0bm20lA

  7. Some of the legendaries are very interesting. Others are meh. Some are overpowered and some are very weak.

Overall I’m quite happy. Many of them opens up builds that would be infinitely less powerful without that item. (+100% pet attack speed, ray of frost pierces, thorns AOE set etc)

Infinite ignore pain has to be toned down and 1 hour shrine gloves have to be toned down. What if they only allowed secondary stats to be present on that ignore pain belt. You lose 20% toughness and 15% dps because of the stats you lose but gain 65% infinite dmg reduction. Seems fair to me. But then again, you might be able to get infinite ignore pain anyway with a huge amount of CD reduction. So maybe it’s not that overpowered once people start maxing out on CD reduction.

They might also have to tone down crushing blow too. But too early to tell tbh. But to reduce the dmg to 10-15% from 25% might do it.

The best thing with items 2.0 is the increase in the amount of useful stats and the decreased amount of primary stats one items can have. Trifecta is still good, but far from the only good choice.

    CD reduction
    main stat
    vitality
    AR
    Resource cost reduction
    Splash dmg
    Crushing blow
    Critical hit chance
    + dmg
    Crit dmg
    attack speed.
+ % dmg to certain skills

    Much affix, many choices, wow!

    • they have actually increased the amount of primary stats an item can have. It’s near thousand now.

      • I mean primary and secondary stats on items. Affixes so to speak.

Affixes are divided up in 2 categories now. Primary, and secondary. This means an overall reduction of the number of top tier affixes one item can have.

  8. I wonder what everyone was expecting with loot 2.0
A solution to the retarded mainstat-emphasis?

Anyone with half a decent understanding of RPG mechanics should have seen from a mile away that these glorious legendary item effects don’t help the core itemization issues at all.

All these shiny legendary effects will get very fast very old. I give them a half life of 2 months. After that, every player has gone through it all and the novelty effect is gone. Replayability and long-term motivation still does not exist as there is no interesting skill/item/character development relation in this game.

  9. Has anyone found a Mempo in RoS ?

Not what I esxpected no, since Blizzard outright said it would not happen.
But it is what should happen.

  11. Is this seriously the best they can come up with ? .. I’ve been a supporter / defender of all things blizzard until now. Sadly i wont be going near this xpac unless there is some actual creativity put into these much vaunted items.

I’ve been playing Path of Exile as a placeholder since it was released as i had nothing left to achieve in d3v (100para hardcore .. blah blah blah) and tho the gameplay is decidedly weaker than d3. the customization afforded to all players is something to behold. I’m afraid blizzard has jumped the shark.

  12. lol, so let me get this straight, they’re fixing the problem of items being nothing but stat sticks in D3, by making them even BIGGER stat sticks? rofl. Good luck with that, Blizzard. I kind of feel for the people who host these Diablo sites. They have to come back to their communities and pretend to be excited about this kind of garbage. All they did was make the numbers bigger, and unclutter the way stats are listed on items.

In all fairness, 2 affixes are good: Absorb frost damage, and 1 hour shrine duration. Fire one could have potential, but the only fire mod on monsters is fire chains, and nobody cares about that. It’ll be nice to heal inside frost novas, though. Question: Crushing Blow seems to be back. Any info on that?

  13. “Prevent all [element] damage” is pretty cool. If the elite modifiers remain the same (fire chains, molten, mortar), fire immunity should be very popular.

But most of these are just pointless gimmicks that won’t affect your build or play style in any way.

  14. I forgot about Molten… Though even playing melee, the only times that one has ever been a problem for me is when I get vortexed into a dying molten monster by the leader of the pack. Mortar is fire type damage? I thought it was physical… Some think Desecrator is Fire, but I think that’s also physical.

  15. Sorry, someone please enlighten me on “critical chance” versus “crushing blow chance”?

I saw Andariel Visage’s Attack Speed removed. That’s like a downgrade to me.

Does it bug anyone at all to see rare account bound?

  16. I’m really liking some of the legendary items. I just hope that some of the existing legendary effects (Maximus summon demon, Andariel’s poison nova) get buffed or scale with your own damage in some way.

  17. I want to know what’s good about champions spawning at shrines, that would be annoying not intersting

  18. Still worried about Pride of Cassius – aka “infinite Ignore Pain”. The belt make it lasts 60 seconds and the cooldown is 30 seconds, therefore, there’s no effort involved into making Ignore Pain infinite, just putting the belt. It isn’t a bug or something unexpected by devs – is something desired by them.

If that’s the kind of power level they want, then maybe gloves of worship isn’t “omg so OP nerf it!”. It’s just too good, especially considering it can be found on the semirandom bag rewards from act 2 bounties on the game as is (I saw that on kripparian stream, but it was late and I was asleep – pretty sure you can learn more about the bags when you talk with a npc nearby tyrael about bounty rewards).

They will have some serious trouble making non-ladder (or even ladder, after the first couple months) hard if they keep the survivability and CB as is.

Wait what? You should really use sarcasm tags.

D3 is just one step above some basic RPG system with items like Greatsword + 3 where all it does is add 3 more damage. It the Call of Duty of RPGs, no need to think just mash buttons which is what a lot of D2 fans don’t like. They want meaningful items and character progression beyond the current parasheneningans with +1 all attributes and MF.

Think about CoD or Battlefield where all you get when you level up is +1 ammo. That’s the item system and character progression in a nutshell.

In case you haven’t played World of Warcraft, especially Mists of Pandaria, it’s the same there. Items are stat sticks and all you can do to “customise” your character is choose between Tank, DPS or Healer depending on the class.

  20. It can’t hurt to make suggestions.

    Here’s some of mine:

    1. How about making a Legendary item, that when equipped, completely changes your appearance, in addition to the Extra Mod that helps game play? Like the old Trang Oul’s set did in D2 … but, more varied options.

-A barb weapon that turns you into a Berzker permanently. Or, perhaps changes you into one of the Ancients or a goat man.

    2. The Dual Leech Ring … bring it back and make it super rare. Can actually steel Life% and turn it into both Life% for you & Resource%.

    3. Amulet’s armor or rings that, once donned, change the sound of the game.

-You hear things no one else hears with one piece of gear; snakes slithering, ghosts whispering .. undead talks in your ears.

-Or, everyone hears you coming … you have your own entrance music … think Darth Vador …

    – Wolves howl intermittently where ever you are. Your mates here it too.

-Boots – Your foot steps make big clunking sounds like a giant heavy rock monster. But, allow the user to bear a two hander in one hand like the Crusader or, if they don’t do that, they just add substantial damage in duels with other people. You can hear your opponent step in the ring and you know he’s wearing those boots; he’s going to hit you HARD.

    4. Make one Legendary item that, when it’s destroyed for Materials has a chance to spawn into any other legendary in the game one time.

    5. add teleport wormhole skill on a ring or Legendary armor Or set bonus for a class other than Wizard. They did it in D2 and it was awesome.

    6. Bring jewels back and make the Legendary Jewel 40% increased damage, 9% attack speed, 5% crushing Blow, etc., etc. etc.

    7. -Perhaps give the chance that an item can be ethereal … so that it’s damage can be UBER in comparison to the already new uber weapons.

    now you … GO~!
