Reaper of Souls Datamined Patch – 19 November


The DiabloWikiReaper of Souls internal build has received a sizeable patch update which we are now datamining. We’re working through all the string changes sifting out the fluff but there’s still a lot to absorb.

    • Yes, that’s in the works. I’m not the programmer but it’s tricky with so many new ones and the code formatting all changed, so DN has to be changed to work with the new game descriptions.

      We’re also considering how to present everything new, since it’s all on sliding scales now. No more have legendaries have one setting; they scale to your Clvl. Same with mobs; no more have they 4 settings, one for each difficulty level. Now they scale to your Clvl as well.

      No one wants to look at a monster or item page and see 70 different tables, one for each character level, and then what, x10 for the difficulty levels? So we’re thinking about some slider, or maybe just showing every 5th or 10th level? Same issue is being pondered on all of the wiki pages as well, alas.

  1. Welp, there goes Critical Mass. Glory to the era of +10% damage passives! MEANINGFUL BUILD DEFINING GAMEPLAY SKILL THINGMAJIKS!

      • You mean I am defending a passive skill that by design:

        1. Introduces significant changes to your gameplay.
        2. Powerful, meaningful, build defining.
        3. Synergizes with two specific stats.
        4. Is fun as all fucking hell to use.

        Over boring trash MMO-esque “tiny % damage boosts talents” like Cold Blooded or Conflagration? The ones the D3 devs themselves mocked pre-release? The ones that even WoW ditched in part due to their immense boring suckitude?

        Why yes, I am.

        Is CM broken? Yes it is. Could it be nerfed and still be all of those things above that make it a great passive skill? Yes. Could Blizzard have striven to make more passives as cool as CM? Yes. Did they? LOL GUYS HAVE +3% DAMAGE FOR LANDING A DIFFERENT COLOR SPELL!

        I mean, we just went through a whole thing where Legendary items needed a whole fucking expansion to fix thanks to their spectacularly lack of quality in terms of actual special effects. As its stands, when Reaper of Souls comes out? Most of the affixes we see on this list will have more of a bloody impact than the most of the passive skills.

        Think about that for a second. Every item slot will have affixes that are bolder, more imaginative, more build defining than most of the passive skill selection.

        • Konfeta have you seen the new frostburn gloves? you´ll have 50% chance to freeze with your cold spells, so you´ll still be able to attain a lot of cc without using the same boring spell…so chill out :d

          • It’s not about losing a specific build. Hell, I agree that CM perma CC lock is stupid and needs to be removed.

            It’s about the fact that the current selection of passive skills is boring. Those Frostburns are literally more interesting to something as simple as a “Cold Wizard” build than any configuration of passives skills you can choose.

            I love that Legendaries are awesome enough to define a build like that. I hate that Blizzard wants to see passives be nothing more than glorified +attribute boosts.

          D3 needs better, more interesting passives, not to have the only ones that actually made you play a different way removed.

          I think, at most, only a third of the total available passives (for each class, and thus in total) should be flat boosts of any kind. The other two thirds should be split evenly between “drastically gameplay changing effects” and passives that specifically enhance a goal a player may have, e.g., helping speedruns, helping to farm bosses, etc.

        • Yes, passives in this game mostly suck. That’s something everyone can agree w/. CM was one of the passives that made this situation a lot worse. It wasn’t a question of flavor or style, it was math running rough-shod over any decision making or tactical awareness. It’s hard to even remember how wizards “usually” play b/c CM was so ubiquitous.

          • Easy CM fix – instead of “reduce the cooldown of your spells by 1 second”, change it to “reduce the cooldown of your spells by 8-10%”. Math-wise this still lets you use crits to shave of big chunks of CD without literally removing CDs entirely.

    • They’re fun to look at. But like Jason Regier said in my interview, just don’t read too much into them and know they’re all a WiP…

    Also I noticed some strings on the Monk, namely Mystic Ally. It looks like you don’t push the button to summon the ally, s/he’s always there, and re-spawns a few seconds after death. Instead, there is an Active ability that the Ally does when you push the button. Is this coming to Wizard Armors and Barb Shouts?

    • Remains to be seen. Crusader Auras don’t have a casting cost or duration. They are just on forever, and you get a short term extra benefit buff just like when the Monk casts a Mantra, but the limit on the Crusader is the cooldown, since they do not have a resource cost like the Monk’s.

      So subtle differences between the classes even in very similar styled abilities.

    All “passive-active” skills should have an active aspect to it.

    But that isnt the point.
    CM was overpowered, but like One with Everything, it pretty much ought to be the poster-child on how to make skills and passives synergize more interestingly with stats.
  7. curious as to what they are playing around with the Mystic Ally. Passive and active I assume actives are the occassional attacks they do? or maybe it will be something the monk controls by hitting the mystic ally skill instead of resummoning?

    • There’s a 30 second cooldown. Looks like the Ally will always be there (unless it’s killed, then it sits out for five seconds, similar to a follower), then you can punch the button and the Ally will do something crazy (like split and explode). The crazy button is on a cooldown.

    – Some legendaries and craft recipes are exclusive to higher difficulties…
    – Horadric Cache? Interesting…
    – Blood Shards / Gambling for items = possibly quite interesting…

    • The difficulty exclusive stuff is fracking AWESOME. Finally. And on that kind of stuff, I can sort of agree to some BoA.

  9. This really does show how we should take datamined things with a pinch of salt. He have the the Monk’s heal being dramatically nerfed in terms of its actual healing ability, then we have another rune on the same skill going from doing 80% of weapon damage to surrounding enemies to about 600%.

    While you do see some VERY fine tuning as one skill’s percentage goes from 185 to 186, it mainly feels like they experimenting in the sense of “what do testers choose if we make this stupidly good? Right, not if we make it underwhelming and THIS stupidly good?” I can understand that since there’s a pretty obvious “best choice” for most runes in the current game, so appealing to more extreme ways of thinking seems to be a good way to diversify (“I want my heal to be amazing” vs “I want my heal to be kinda crappy but also nuke the enemies so well it might as well be a pure attack”).

  10. As for that image with the D2 classes drinking with the D3 ones, maybe they’re introducing a chat system that crosses over between D3 and D2? They seem to be cross-integrating (if that’s even a term) their various games in their Battle.net app, and you already get notified in D3 that your friend is playing SC2 or whatever, so it does kind of make sense. I know requests to add launchers for classic Blizzard games into the Battle.net app are quite popular on the suggestions forum too.

    It feels like any other use, like it just being the chat button or something, is a bit intentionally misleading with the presence of D2 classes. Or maybe they’ve gone back and added the D3 classes into D2, and the D2 classes into D3, and you can take your characters not only between acts in each game, but between entire games at will, with them changing into the appropriate graphical style? And maybe each player will have the Amazon and Sorceress give them a massage as they play the game, or the Barbarian and Paladin if they prefer, and all the gold they find is actually real gold.

    • It would be a good April fools joke if you booted up Diablo 3 and it loaded your character in the Diablo 2 game world.

  12. Wrath Insanity nerfed again to 60%? There is no way anyone will ever use the skill with 120 seconds cooldown. Nerves of Steel 100% to 50%. Time Warp 20% to 12.5%. Cold Blooded 20% to 10%. They must be joking. I love how they are destroying the viable skills/passives so we will be forced to use the ones we don’t like just because they are not nerfed. That’s the Blizzard way of fixing things? Seriously, lot of the skills are just higher numbers but it won’t fix them because they are BAD BY DESIGN. Poor Blizz…

    • Item sourced damage, defensive properties, and damage amounts/patterns from enemies are currently intended to change significantly as well. For example: if our characters will cause 5x the amount damage, a 40% reduction may be necessary, if not desirable.

      Perhaps we would do well to consider and evaluate based upon the apparent overall concept rather than isolating specific aspects, especially considering that the majority of us have not yet experienced the Beta.

  13. That would make it even better for long cooldowns. Would be insane for the new Archon for example.
    Hard to say if that is a problem though.

    It is a difficult passive to balance for sure.
    Maybe there could be an internal cap of not being able to reduce a cooldown by more than 75% for example, but that might be “confusing” to explain to players, and Blizzard surely hates things that could confuse anyone…

    But even if couldnt be balanced in the current design, you could still have a CM which does X on crits. Maybe reducing cooldown is bad for balance, but it could be something else then.
    Having effects that are based on how much you have of one or multiple stats, is what should be preserved.

  15. Sounds like you cant find some legendaries unless you play on Torment.
    But if Torment is simply meant to be the new Inferno, that makes perfect sense. In that case, it is probably all max lvl legendaries.

    • the blues said that torment would equal the current mp10 & above not inferno so I don’t see how it make a sense to restrict max lvl legendaries to it
