Reaper of Souls Beta Patch and Character Wipe Underway

Blizzard has taken the Reaper of Souls beta down for a day to implement the new patch and character wipe.

Update 5:45 p.m. PDT: The Friends and Family beta has been brought offline for maintenance and to help prepare for our upcoming patch. We’re currently expecting at least 24 hours of downtime, but don’t have an exact ETA at the moment for when it will again be available.

At present, we anticipate that we’ll be keeping the beta offline until our patch and character wipe can be completed. This means that once the beta is brought back online, a new patch should be available and all beta characters should be wiped.

We apologize for the short notice and would like to thank everyone for their feedback thus far!

What’s going to be in the patch? They haven’t said much about it, but word of a new/returning/renamed feature was sneaked into another reply about end game content. Here’s the new bit:

We’ve taken the bulk of content that was once DiabloWikiNephalem Trials and converted them into a new style of event called Cursed Chests. These events should be available in the next phase of testing and on the PTR, and we’ll be able to share a bit more about them as that draws nearer.

It doesn’t sound like that’s coming in the patch tomorrow, if they’re talking about sharing details when it draws closer. Which means the Reaper of Souls beta patch contents are still put-near a total mystery. We shall unwrap them like surprise Christmas prezzies! As for Cursed Chests, I’m taking that as good news because, 1) randomly-spawning Jar of Souls style “waves of attackers” events sounded like a lot of fun, and 2) Blizzard bowed to popular sentiment and changed the name to not include the overused word, “Nephalem”.

Why ask for endgame feedback now when you acknowledge that your only subtracting from the beta?
Nevalistis: We’re asking for endgame feedback for a number of reasons — most notably because it’s one of the features we’ve received the most community inquiry about (and something we know is important to good chunk of our players). While we may not be able to implement some of the more grandiose ideas we’ve seen shared on fan sites and these forums during the course of our beta, we still want to know how you feel our current systems and features can be improved. And we’re still interested in exploring options for the future! Development doesn’t stop at launch with any Blizzard game, and Reaper of Souls will be no exception.

Similarly, while a big focus of the any Blizzard beta is polish and refinement, that doesn’t mean the only thing we intend to do during beta is remove content. As an example, we’ve taken the bulk of content that was once Nephalem Trials and converted them into a new style of event called Cursed Chests. These events should be available in the next phase of testing and on the PTR, and we’ll be able to share a bit more about them as that draws nearer.

Based on your track record with D3 why should I have faith my concerns will be addressed?
Nevalistis: That’s for you to decide. What I can do is provide as much information as possible and as it becomes available, so that you can make an informed choice and provide us your feedback. Contrary to what’s been presented in this thread, we are listening, and we’re super eager to hear what you have to say. In particular, we are ever grateful to those who have taken the time to productively and constructively present their concerns or ideas, and we encourage you to continue doing so. I promise it’s not going into the void!

  1. Could this be the beginning of the Closed Beta? I certainly hope so!

    • Would be awesome,but highly doubt it

      • Agreed. I’d imagine that Closed Beta will start in early-to-mid January. They seem to have ironed out a lot of the starting problems/balance issues with RoS, so CB is probably approaching. I’d guess that they’ll have this major patch, and then release CB at either the next major patch, or the one after that.

        • We learned from F&F Beta that Blizzard can be unpredictable with their dates , things might look too far away when they are actually very close(F&F Beta) or they might say Soon and it might take a year for that soon.

          So all I have now is hope , no more guesses , I just hope that Closed beta will start with next patch not farther in the future.

      • Granted, it does pretty much look like a “time’s up, let’s throw together what loose stuff we have” move.

    • “Our Friends and Family Beta is just the first step of public testing, and by the end of the year we will be moving into Closed Beta.”

      That would be sweet 😀

    • That is indeed my hope here! 😉

  2. \\These events should be available in the next phase of testing and on the PTR, and we’ll be able to share a bit more about them as that draws nearer.\\

    2 in 1:
    Next phase-> RoS closed beta?
    PTR-> D3 classic patch 2.x?

    Soon^TM 😀

  3. The God declares that D3 (including vanilla) needs all the endgame content it can get – as well as all the content in general.

    The ‘moar moar moar we double it’ approach should’ve addressed the content, not ‘the numbers… on everything’.

    Like it or not, but RMAH (as abused as it was by botters) was, or rather could be an decent endgame, if done better. Now it will be gone, and something large and powerful content-wise is needed to fill the hole.

    Heavenly wisdom says: Adding endgame content EXCLUSIVELY to RoS is effectively as completely killing the vanilla. ‘How to lose friends and alienate people’, thanks the film for the quote.

    The God will write more about this soon.

    • They want Vanilla and RoS players to play together across A1-A4, without A5 and Crusader. So D3V will get as much content as you can dream of 🙂

      • Is there a confirmation of this? Nevermind, The God wouldn’t trust them even if it is written with largest font on frontpage.

        While transfer to better and newer is normal and expected to happen for all interested players (usually, at least one third is not – The God suspects lot more in this case), but killing the game is uncommon. Even several years after WC3 TFT was released, there were somewhat strong RoC community – and it is supported still

  4. These events should be available in the next phase of testing and on the PTR, and we’ll be able to share a bit more about them as that draws nearer.

    That doesn’t sound to me like this patch they’re applying now.
