New Diablo 2 Median XL Launches

New Diablo 2 Median XL Launches

Season 16 is now live for Diablo 3 but in other news, the latest version of Median XL has also been released for Diablo 2.

Diablo 2 players are eager to get their hands on the latest version of the Median XL mod which has just been released today. Unfortunately, due to popular demand, it’s proving harder than some would hope. The site has been bombarded with traffic so the site has been offline for quite a while today. We are not sure if there are contingency plans to make it available or you will just have to keep trying.

It’s worth mentioning that links to file mirrors are being posted all over the place but be careful of dodgy links and it’s probably best to pick it up from the official source.

      • I downloaded it and played it. Not idea how different it is from previous Median XL versions, but I didn’t really like it.

Got up to Act 3 with an Amazon and now I’m going to quit. It’s clearly made for min-maxers and people who like to play all the classes etc, which is not me.

Overall I really didn’t like it. Almost all of the monsters have crazy spell effects that spam the screen, making it hard to see what is going on. Items drop like rain all the time, and there are SO many affixes and so many item slots, that most of the time swapping from item A to item B makes no appreciable difference to your character, so you can just ignore items for ages and not worry about it. Despite all the new skills, for the Amazon at least the skill tree is far more restrictive than D2 – there are only 5 bow skills, and 1 of them is a passive, and you can only get that passive if you don’t have any other blood/javelin/spear skills, and then you need the passive in order to get the last skill in the tree and that last skill seemed stronger and superior to the first skill in the tree in every way so then I stopped using that. End’s up just being spamming the same couple of skills repeatedly, but because I had 10 minions, who moved about 2x the speed of my character and did quite a lot of damage and lived for a long time, I was never in any particular danger.

Another problem with the itemisation was the runewords – up until level 100 all of the runewords just require a single rune and they have crafted stats, so there’s not really any point trying to find good item drops since whatever runewords you can make are specifically tailored to be useful, whereas random drops have random grab bags of affixes making most of them trash and not worth the effort of evaluating.

Overall it’s very impressive, but not fun for me. In contrast I found Beezlebub (D1 mod) really really fun and interesting, and got a character up to the last difficulty (Inferno) which was just crazily hard.

        • Agreed 100%

Nice try, but not quite. With the ability they clearly have to modify the game and make changes, they could make a really, really good unofficial patch or just add in some much needed QoL features rather than this flaming demonic mess of a MOD.
