More Details on Shared Paragon and other RoS News

The Diablo CMs haven’t made many forum posts since the Reaper of Souls announcement, but they’ve answered some key questions, and Lylirra has been blowing it up on Twitter, though there’s only so much value anyone can manage with just 140 characters of explanation. From what the CMs have told us via email, they’re not going to be answering every last question just yet, to leave space for media interviews from Gamescom to have their moment. The show runs through the weekend after all, and we can’t expect to know everything just yet.

For now, there’s some good stuff from the CMs in the forums and Twitter.

Are there any plans to remove AH on PC version or at least make seperated server without AH?
Grimiku: Removing the Auction House would fix the problem it created, but that would also create new problems, like chat spam (WTS/WTB [item link]) all day long. That’s definitely not ideal, either. One of the ideas driving Loot 2.0 is that players should not feel that they need to use the Auction House. We don’t mind if players use it, but targeted drops, reduced trash items, better stat ranges, new Legendary effects, and the Mystic should help players feel empowered by the item hunt, and not forced to use the Auction House.

Will be able to use my barb gear on the crusader?
Grimiku: The Crusader class is kind of like a walking tank, and they use Strength as their primary attribute. I think that really fits the Crusader concept, who is a zealous holy warrior wrapped in heavy armor, and wields punishing weapons (like a flail) with a massive tower shield. A lot of your Barbarian gear will be a good fit for them.

Is loot 2.0 coming WITH Reaper of Souls, or will it come before RoS?
Grimiku: We want to implement a lot of the new systems and features in a pre-expansion patch for free. That should include Paragon 2.0, Loot 2.0, Loot Runs, and Nephalem Trials. For now, you’ll need to purchase the expansion to play as the Crusader, explore Act V, unlock the Mystic, and level up to 70. These details may change as development moves along, but we want some of the core gameplay improvements to be available for everyone.

Those are all forum posts. Click through for quotes of all the good questions and answers from the various Blue twitter feeds. Most of them concern exactly how the Sharagon system will work, in terms of HC vs. SC, levels from dead HC characters, grandfathering in current levels vs. earning new ones, distribution of the stat points across an account, and more.

hi. from the “Loot 2.0 – Diablo III: Reaper of Souls” I understood that Critical hit chance/damage is getting nerfed. am i correct?
We’ve not shared any info along those lines to my knowledge. Changes to affixes are still under development/not yet final. 🙂 —Lylirra

hey could u answer my question about ladder please?
We don’t have any details to share about a ladder system right now. 🙂 —Lylirra

Interesting, seems you ‘Assign’ Paragon Points to a character. So you earn them with 1 hero but can put them onto another?
Correct. All normal characters on an account will share a Paragon level, same for Hardcore, as well as earned Paragon Points.

Question: So if I earn x points for one level, will that be x points for each character, or x points to entire account?
Current plan is that the points would be awarded to all heroes for each pLvl earned. Still a work in progress, tho! Note that this would be separated by game type (i.e. Normal/HC). Normal heroes share a pLvL, HC heroes share a pLvl. —Lylirra

There is a lot of talk about a “Nephalem Trials” mode going around. What does that game mode consist of?
I’ll let the devs spill the details in interviews first. It’s their brain child! 🙂 @joshmosq @BrianKindregan –Lylirra
We’ll definitely answer that question in interviews, and it’ll all come out soon – stay tuned! –BrianKindregan

All normal characters on an account will share a Paragon level, same for Hardcore, as well as earned Paragon Points. –Lylirra

it is stated that pragon levels will work retroactively, will it include all dead chars, dead chars not moved to archive or none?
Not sure, I can ask! Those details may not be finalized at the moment, though. (Just a heads up.) So, just checked with Wyatt & that detail is still being fleshed out. We’ll share more infoz as development continues.–Lylirra

Will current paragon progress on SC characters transfer over to HC characters?
Currently no. Normal heroes and HC heroes will share separate Paragon levels. –Lylirra

What about the players with a single paragon 100 character that spent thousands of hours. Will this be accumulated? or just 100.
I believe it will just be 100, since that is where pEXP is currently capped & stops being tracked. Many details still TBD, tho! –Lylirra

Query: The word was that Loot 2.0 wouldn’t be “before Blizzcon”. Isn’t waiting another year for it “before the expac” kinda cruel?
So, I guess “cruel” is kind of subjective. We’re not holding the changes back purposely to release w/the expac. Timing just fits. –Lylirra

I understand, just wanted a little confirmation. See you in a year. 🙂
Don’t mark your calendar until we actually share a release date. 😉 Pro-tip! –Lylirra

My main question is, will paragon points be respectable or changeable in some way as diff stats for diff builds (ie crit vs str)
The current plan is to allow players to re-spec their Paragon points. 🙂 —Lylirra

That’s a good selection of the Q&A worth reading. There’s a ton more with general EXCITE chat and such that’s not really worth archiving. As Lylirra said in several tweets, stay tuned to Gamescom for more details about everything via interviews. (We’ll post them here as soon as they go live, of course.) Blizzard employee tweets and B.net forums are *not* going to be the main info sources during this convention.

  1. hmm seems they are very very defensive about self-found mode….

  2. So they “WANT” to pre-patch a lot of that stuff in, but WILL they?

  3. awesome work flux!

  4. It is not clear if each char has a plvl or if there is only one global paragon level for the accound but these answer for Lylirra tends to make me think that each character has a plvl and the number of bonus points available for all characters is the sum of all the plvl. If this is true, it is a real incentive to level a character in each available slot.

    • yeah,
other than “challenge” I wonder if there’s any reason to get one char to P level 80 instead of 4 chars to P level 20

both give me 80 shared Paragon Points to distribute
      and this
“Current plan is that the points would be awarded to all heroes for each pLvl earned. ”

makes it seem like it makes more sense to have 4 P lvl 20 chars because they would each get 80 Paragon Points

somebody please correct my poor reading comprehension

  5. ”Query: The word was that Loot 2.0 wouldn’t be “before Blizzcon”. Isn’t waiting another year for it “before the expac” kinda cruel?

English isn’t my main language. Can someone please say if that means:
    -it will be before blizzcon
    -it will be before expansion

    • There won’t be any content patches to Diablo III before BlizzCon. Loot 2.0 won’t come out before BlizzCon.

Loot 2.0 will most probably come in 2014, after BlizzCon, but before the expansion.

Hope I’ve cleared that up 🙂

    • It’s ambiguous. Basically all you can get from this is that they are working on it and will release it when ready, whether before, around or after the xpac, where around the same time seems likely from that post.

    • it will be after BlizzCon, and before the Expansion, but not necessarily in 2014
we may get it by Christmas of this year

      • most likely it will be closer to the exp than to blizz, so my guess is not this year.

best case scenario you get a PTR december 2013.

  6. Can Smart Drop screw your drops ?

Ex: A barbarian dropping a quiver rolling with smart drop. Will this quiver be tailored for a barbarian, with like + X STR, even though he can’t use this type of item ?

    • Wondering this too (and it’s something that someone should ask the devs) — what if I have a level 60/70 Demon Hunter and I *want* to use that quiver for him/her that drops on my Barb. I feel like they are encouraging having multiple characters since they are making paragon levels account-wide…. and finding loot I can use on an alt is useful too.

However, one could argue it’s most important to find loot for the character you’re currently playing — if I wanted loot on my DH, maybe I’m just better playing it, but sometimes it’s fun to gear up an alt on my “powerful” main.

Didn’t they say Smart Drop is a “chance” and not guaranteed as well? Regardless, would be really stupid if the Smart Drop put strength on a quiver while on your Barb. Not only is it unusable on your DH alt, you can’t even sell it on the AH and it’s basically worthless.

      • Yes..Smart drop is a “random chance” when the item drops to roll toward your character. That said, you could always use the mystic to reroll +str to try to get to +dex.

    • Honestly, if it did that on class-specific items, it shouldn’t be called Smart Drop. That’s just a regular loot drop now. 😉 Someone definitely should ask… use that tweeter thing and hit up Lylirra.

    • Presumably smart drops would only click on certain items, those of a type your character would want. (Or neutral items, like armor.) It could have interesting effects on the economy and general gear available. So if 50% of players are playing as Barbs, then a much higher % of total gear is found with +str instead of +dex or +int. That could actually sway the market long term if smart drops are that common.

Part of loot 2.0 is going to be a removal of useless attributes on certain class items. So you won’t get just +dex or +str on a wand, for instance. And presumably that would apply to str/int on quivers. (Though you may still get the str+vit roll on a wand, just not STR by itself.)

      • That would actually be a very good thing, though.

If 50% of people are playing Bards that means that 25% of loot comming in is Bard loot. Which means that Barb loot becomes very common. And economy balances itself out. Common Barbarian loot reduces in value which means it becomes cheap and sells for less. Which actually incentivises people to play other classes because gear for those classes is worth more. So, if you find a really good Bard item, it will be worth 10mil (example numbers). If you find really good Wizard item (let’s assume wizards are underplayed in this scenario) it will be worth 100mil.

      • Thank you for the clarification. Though, how much “presumably” ?

Someone suggested to reroll the affix, is it known how many rerolls are possible on an item ?
Can we reroll multiple affixes ?
        Are rerolled items BoA ?
Is the cost of rerolling really limiting in some way ?

Assuming multi rerolls, is this possible :
expected scenario by the devs: player finds a very good item and rerolls an affix to have a chance for an awesome item
likeable scenario: player buys a very good and cheap item and rerolls it until awesome

Sorry for the flurry of questions.

I knew they would try to keep the auction house... If they have a spine, they should remove it or offer self-found mode.

i want them to keep it personally even though i wont use it. leave it there for those that want to use it but then offer a mode for those of us who do not want to take part in it.

i hope the devs have think about that. the contrary would be gross!

  9. They’re not going to fix one of the CORE issues with the game because they’re afraid of CHAT SPAM?

What the hell happened to Blizzard? Seriously.

    • They have very little financial incentive to remove the auction house, and great financial incentive to leave it in.

The AH is a recurring source of revenue for Blizzard, while a box sale is a one-shot burst. And considering that the majority of people who hate the AH (the hardcore players) already bought the game…. well, you see how this stacks up for them. It is the same reason they demand online-only game play, even though the console version has put the lie to that. Keep people in the system, and they are more likely to spend money in the AH.

    • Trading sucked, to the point of uselessness, in D2. It’s why things like trading forums and parasitic d2 item sites and sellers exist.

The AH is a great improvement over D2 style WUG trading. But as we’ve all seen since launch, it can be too easy to use, when self finding good gear is too difficult. So I like Blizzard’s goal of keeping the AH but trying to make it not the only way to get top gear. Whether they’ll pull that off remains to be seen…

What the hell happened to Blizzard? Seriously.

they are just going to make any excuse they can to justify the AH. i would feel much better if they would just say “cause we want another wow like cash cow and the RMAH is the best we can do”

i still would of preferred to pay a monthly fee to play if it meant no RMAH

  11. Christ, the RMAH isn’t the problem, b/c it was the same way in D2 (professional bots and dupes selling items for real cash). The drop rates on high runes were worse than anything in D3, and there was a very, VERY narrow game space to find them in.

The RMAH is NOT the problem. The lack of gear sinks (character/account binding, competitive crafting) is the main problem, followed closely by Magic Find, then the ultra random nature of the drops. The great gear is too damn cheap. So cheap, that you should probably be selling it (and gold) on the same third party sites we had in D2. There will always be an RMAH. The question becomes who runs it. Blizzard, or those other guys.

I think too many folks, who either did or didn’t play WoW, expect specific rewards for a specific amount of time played. Diablo has never been like that, and it’s frustrating for a lot of people, most of them newcomers. You could win big in one shot, or spend years never finding what you want. It’s gambling, straight up. Now they’re changing the paradigm. They are nerfing randomness. You grind/farm for X number of hours, you’re guaranteed Y rewards, rewards that you can actually use. This is not Diablo, but maybe it’s better than Diablo.

Of course, the most important thing they are going to do, official RMAH or black market RMAH, is account/character binding. That alone is a huge improvement over the mess Jay Wilson left us. And they had it in before beta, too, but decided to be stupid about it.

    • I don’t know if people expect rewards after a specific amount of time played or invested…. some probably do expect it.

However, I do know that many people don’t want to play the AH interface to find their new gear/rewards. That’s just stupid, and not Diablo.

    • While I don’t disagree with your points about the systematic problems Diablo III has, I think you are underestimating the pitfalls of the RMAH.

In D2, the portion of the community that used sites like D2JSP were a small fraction of the population as a whole. However, in D3, the RMAH is ubiquitous, and used by virtually everyone. That has a dramatic impact on the in game economy, and it is reflected in the progression system Blizzard has built.

Diablo 3 isn’t so much broken as it is deliberately designed to encourage people to use the AH rather than rely on the lottery of the previous game.

the stupid drop rates caused by the RMAH is the problem. you did not need those runes in d2 so who cares what the drop rate was? trying to get through inferno in this game playing self found is far worse than beating d2 self found. not to mention in this game items have to drop with very specific stats to be of any good. its bad enough getting 1 legendary to drop let alone a good one

  13. Not 100% sure I follow the Paragon sharing… So they’re saying if someone from D3 has 10 P100s, they’d start D3X with everyone at Paragon 1000? (Or 1000 Paragon points, to be precise, with unlimited respecs for each character.) Sounds like it might be annoying to have to assign thousands of points everytime you log in. Also, at what rate will Paragon levels be earned in D3x? in the level 1000 example above, how much EXP will it take to get to level 1001? Does this mean if you have only 1 character at P99, you have to earn experience equal to what it takes to hit 100 now? Seems like the best way to level Paragon levels is to level 60 characters to low Paragon levels, rather than waiitng for D3X to hit. It’s theoretically MUCH easier to level a character from 60 to P25, than it is to level a character from 99-100. You can earn Paragon points at much higher efficency. Looks like there’s a major reason to play multiple characters in D3 now.

Also, what’s going to happen with crafting? Seems like it’ll be more important in D3X, but it’ll be impossible to play the game if those stupid auction house based gold prices remain. Imagine if you have to spend 10 million gold to reroll a stat. AH tycoons can reroll all day with their ‘2 bees’ whereas you can play for a whole year and only afford 2 rerolls… Unless gold from monsters is going to start dropping in 100k stacks or something…

  14. great questions!

Particularly enjoyed the one concerning retroactive HC paragon points…if I keep playing my monk right and he dies in HC, I may have to start at P1 when the expansion comes out lol.

  15. my interpretation is that the account will have the Paragon level as to avoid people camping on low para levels to gain para points. I.E. if your highest P level is 100, then automatically all your characters will share P100. Therefore as I believe it is at the moment, perhaps it makes no difference whether you have 10 P100 or just 1.

  16. Adest: pretty sure the paragon level will now be tied to account and not character so if you have 10 level 100 paragon characters your account paragon level will be 100. if you have 1 100 paragon character and 9 at level 1 your account will have paragon level 100

will the account paragon level work with new characters? if i make a level 1 character will i have all the paragon attribute points right away? will i get the magic/gold find boost right from the start?

  17. About sharagon, we have the answer: they’ll add up the XP of all chars (probably dead ones which are not erased in HC too).
About the fact that you can buy a cheap item to modify it, it should kill the market for high-value items right now. The difference between trifecta an quadrifecta in much less if you can reroll affixes at will.
