GAME Go Into Administration

GAME go into AdministrationUnfortunate news today, GAME has gone into administration.  It was hoped a buyer would step up and save the flailing chain but that hasn’t happened.  So, the CEO of the high-street retailer has resigned this morning and shops up and down the UK are beginning to close.   GAME was one of the first to offer pre-orders of the Diablo 3 Collector’s Edition, so anyone who, like me, placed their orders early will be, with much composure, wondering “OMG, WTF?!?!  This also applies to regular copies of the game.

Their website is merely a holding page saying it’s down for maintenance – somewhat understating the situation – but also that they “are currently reviewing and processing orders placed on this website.”  Their Facebook page offers some more insight, none of it that good.

2.Refunds and Exchanges: Until further notice, we will not be able to offer refunds or exchanges for products purchased either before the administration or for products purchased from the date of the administration.

3.Pre-Orders: No new pre-orders can be taken until further notice. No refunds can be given for any pre-order deposits which have been paid. We are reviewing this over the next week.

I checked my credit card statement and I don’t actually see the debit for the CEs.  Has anyone else who ordered the CE or regular game through GAME noticed if they were debited?  Do they debit at the time of despatch perhaps?  In any case I ordered another copy of the CE from Amazon and a regular copy too.

    1. That’s terrible! How large of the segment is this store? The equivalent of Gamestop in the US?

      • I heard on the radio it has 600 stores. I don’t know how popular it is for people buying games (not popular enough it seems) but it is a big part of the highstreet for games retail. In fact I can’t actually think of another national retailer that focuses entirely on gaming.

      • Pre-orders in the UK generally don’t take cash until the game ships, so if you’ve not lost out, it’s not a “scam”.

    2. I wonder what the number of pre-orders were at.  In the US Diablo 3 sites atop the charts (at #1) with 473,152 pre-orders.  That’s up 17,000 from last week.

    3. Game tend not to take any money until a few days before postage. I’ll be sure to cancel mine should the Game site ever come out of it’s “Down for Maintanance” Status

    4. Sooner or later all digital content will be delivered exclusively through Internet, this was inevitable. Online PC digital stores are already outselling retail, traditional stores. We’ll see what happens on new generation consoles…

    5. In more recent news, the Triplestack Hawaiian BBQ shack down the street went out of business.

    6. I had to wikipedia “Administration” (as a legal concept) because the term is foreign to me in the US.  For those of you wondering, it’s analogous to filing “Chapter 11” in the States (bankruptcy).  That may have been obvious from the context of this article. An administrator is appointed to run the company on behalf of the creditors until options can be found (selling the business, re-capitalizing, etc). If no options can be found, the company may be liquidated.

    7. GAME (atleast my local store) was taking £5 deposits for the pre order of this.  This most likely also affects Gamestation, as they are part of the same chain.  I also read somewhere is part of the chain.  All 3 websites are currently down.
Damn shame tbh, appart from the above stores, there’s not really another specialized game shop for the UK :(.

    8. Ah, that sucks. I hope all of you that preordered a Collector’s Edition from them successfully procure one from another retailer. I’d much rather that than scalpers pick them up and resell them.

    9. was good, used to get my orders from em all the time, till GAME took em down the pan with em. Shame about peoples jobs but not giving refunds for people’s pre-orders or allowing them not to cancel from their website is just bad, can you imagine if a bank did something similar?

    10. I’ve pre ordered my CE through game.
Only $10 down but I’m not worried about the money.

But I am worried about not getting my CE!

I wonder if Blizzard will supply another retailer with CE’s to fill GAME’s preorders.

      • Went in to GAME in Wollongong Australia and they said it’s only UK and Spain not Australia.

I feel for others but it SEEMS like I’m ok.
