  1. Interesting the gender split is 5 to 5 on this bunch. Anyone with a long memory recalls the male Wizard being HATED when first revealed. I’ll have to run a vote at some point to measure class gender acceptance.

I don’t have any real preference for WDs or Barbs, but Monks and Crusaders seem like they should be male to me, and DHs and Wizs should be female. Your mileage may vary, of course.

    • If a player is fussy about what gender they’re in-game character is…their issues goes MUCH deeper. Might be time to come out of the closet 😉

      • I’ll have a “don’t care” option when I do the vote, and I’m curious to see how many people really don’t have a preference. Not many players get into the role playing, but not caring at all seems odd to me. It’s not like caring what actor or voice is cast for the movie version of a character you like from a book.

Given the geekgasms that have attended the announcement of casting for the upcoming Star Wars re-quels, it’s obvious that many fans are very invested in who portrays their favorite characters. I’m not one of them in that case, but the RPG character archetypes fit or do not fit their roles in the minds of most fans.

I was talking about this issue with HolyKnight last night and we were imagining D2 chars with gender options. Wizard and Barb and Necro and Paladin seem okay with either gender, and those classes all in D3 in slightly altered forms. HK didn’t think a female Druid would work, though I didn’t object to that.

A male Amazon though… that seems wrong. And it would be, by the game lore. The Diablo version isn’t the female-only Greek mythology; there are male warriors and hunters in the the Amazon tribes on the island of Skovos, but a male would have to be very different in style and tactics. IIRC the lore said only the females were archers, while the male warriors were more traditional sword wielders.

The D2 Assassin is problematic as well; a male version would obviously have a different costume, but he’d just be some generic guy in black and would feel too much like a ninja.
