Diablo Fan Art Watch #116: Post Blizzcon 2011 – Fan Art Contest Winners

Welcome friends to the latest installment of the Diablo Fan Art Watch. This week we show off the two of three winning pieces in Blizzard’s Blizzcon2011 Fan Art Contest.

We begin with Chaoyuan Xu’s “Diablo III” which won the first place in the contest. This epic scene shows a great vista of a large and complex city with a demon being ridden by someone; crashing through walls greeting our friends the Witch Doctor and Barbarian.

Then wrapping this week is Toby Lewin’s “Tyrael VS Hell” which shows the Archangel we all love: Tyrael; with traditional wings instead of the wispy sound based wings. Standing there in the middle of the light from heaven above as he is surrounded by a massive horde of demons.

Congratulations to Chaoyuan Xu, and Toby Lewin on their winning placements in this contest. Its about time Diablo 3 won some fan art contests at Blizzcon.

      • Yeah, man… I don’t think I’ve ever commented on artwork before, but these are incredible!

    1. Wow, the wings are so horribly off on the Tyrael one. Had potential, but completely ruined by the fact that the artist is a phony Diablo fan.

      • Yeah, seriously, that’s how they drew Tyrael?

They should have done 2 versions, 1 with feathered wings (’cause they *are* awesome), and a proper one with the jelly-tentacles we’ve come to know and love.

      • Oh trust me I’m a huge Diablo fan, otherwise I wouldn’t have spent weeks studying Tyrael 🙂 As for the wings, I was trying to give a more Renaissance-esque, Heaven Vs Hell twist on Diablo. If you don’t like the whole image purely because it’s not stricly adhering to the traditional Tyrael, I totally understand, but it was an intentional decision to create an alternate version, not just some absent minded oversight 🙂

I’m aware of how cool Tyrael’s original light ribbons are and I’m a massive Tyrael fanboy. So ever since finishing this version I’ve been working on a more traditional version 😀

    2. The second one seems kinda generic to me, would fit into any game with Angels, can’t really identify anything that says it’s Diablo.
First one, however, is just awesome, absolutely amazing.

      • The fan art contest entries have generally been seen before blizzcon, as people post them on DA, or fansites like this one. So yeah, most years we’ve seen the winners before they’re announced. The second one here we hadn’t seen, likely since it’s by an Asian artist and thus wouldn’t have been on DA or come to our attention.
