Diablo 3 Season Ladders Confirmed – Coming Soon

The Ladders are Coming

This evening at the launch event in L.A Josh Mosqueira revealed that Ladders are coming in the first major content patch for Reaper of Souls.

Josh said that one of the features they would have liked to have completed for launch was ladders but they wanted to spend time on it to get it right. The good news is that ladders will be launched with the first major content patch for Reaper of Souls. Note this is a “content” patch not a normal patch. The time frame for this release is currently a “couple of months”.

The ladders will take the form of “Seasons” with a “ladder-like” aspect according to Josh. Characters will level up and there will be specific ladders for seasons and special “goodies” will drop in those seasons.

When you’re making a game you come up with a lot of good ideas, and some ideas like Devil’s Hand you say: it’s awesome, it probably needs to bake a little bit longer. But one of them that we felt was really important, that we felt we really needed to take the proper time to develop it, was one of the features you guys have asked about a lot. You might have noticed that Wyatt and myself have done a lot of research for something called ladders. I’m very happy to say that as part of our first big content patch coming out in the next couple of months, we are going to be releasing Seasons, which will include a ladder-like aspect to them.

Q: So you have to let us know: what exactly are Seasons?

Josh Mosqueira: Well, we’re still working on them, but the general gist is that you’ll be able to level up a character, we will have specific ladders for seasons, and also some goodies that will drop along the way. There’s more information of that to come, and we’re not making an announcement of when, but for sure Seasons are coming to Reaper of Souls. Yeah, the secret is out.

More information will be revealed in the next few weeks according to Josh.

DiabloWikiWyatt Cheng spoke about an expansion on the current DiabloWikiNephalem Rift system with DiabloWikiTiered Rifts

New end game challenges… Josh mentioned that the first content patch is going to have Seasons. I’m happy to announce that there is another major feature coming in the patch 2.1, which is going to be what we’re internally calling Tiered Rifts. The idea behind that is an actual challenge scenario, where players do increasingly hard Rifts, to try and see who can get the farthest.

The basic mechanics that we have working right now is: you go through the game in Adventure Mode, you do your Bounties, you do a Nephalem Rift. If you clear the Nephalem Rift, there’s a chance to get what’s called a Greater Rift Token. If you successfully clear the Greater Rift in a certain time limit, then you unlock a Greater Rift Key (Rank 2). If you clear that one, you get Rank 3, etc. Each one is harder than the previous one. Much like Seasons, we’re looking at having a leaderboard as well, so you’ll be able to compare your progress to the people on your Friends List, your Clan, and the whole region. You’ll be able to see who got to the highest Tiered Rift, and what time were they able to obtain on that.

  1. Hope the stuff that drops in Ladders are awesome.

    • Hope the stuff that drops in ladders is meaningless.

  2. I never took part in the d2 ones but I think I will for d3. Can’t wait for more details.

  3. They better give me more inventory or stash space then, with all the new stuff it already is too little.

    • No kidding, with all these sets and legendarily to find and an inability to trade them, I foresee needing a lot of storage space. That’s before having ladder only items to store for after the seasons over, which can’t be replaced.

  4. “Coming shortly after release.”

    Well, we’ve heard that before.

    • I assume, or should i say azzume, hahahahahaha hahahahaha lolol soo funny!!!11, … erhmmm that you are talking about PvP.

Ladders or tiered rifts don’t require special contained balance, that would require endless tuning that would take up valuable develop time. They don’t require any special rules, special arenas or game mode or content to be fun to participate in. It’s the exact same game except that you are competing against others in clearing it faster. With that in mind I think that there is a very little to no chance that they have to scrap or delay anything.

Also, you seem very concerned about a game that you rage quitted several months before release.

      • “Also, you seem very concerned about a game that you rage quitted several months before release”
Only shows, how much he still values it’s predecessor.

  5. Yay! We’ll be getting ladders as quickly as we get PvP, right?

  6. Ladders in patch 1.1 I can’t wait.

  7. I kinda hate the fact that Ladders will become mandatory just because it gives us items we wouldn’t find anywhere else.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for new game mechanics. I think it is vital for the games longevity. I am just afraid that ladders will force people to play it.

Hardcore mode, and to a certain extent D2 PvP works because it only applies to a certain niche of the gaming community. You play hardcore and PvP because it is the gameplay that entices you the most. So in short, it is a personal choice. But with Ladder, almost 100% of the players can’t afford to ignore it if stronger items can only drop in there.

  8. “special “goodies” will drop in those seasons.”
I see Blizzard still can take ideas from other games. I wouldn’t hold my breath for the ladder patch however.

    ...

That doesn’t have to be the case.

    Path of Exile has “ladders”.

Sometimes PoE ladders have items we wouldn’t find anywhere else. Sometimes they don’t.
It all depends how the devs set up that season.

  10. The time frame is as expected. Or sooner, perhaps. No need for ladders at launch since we’re all busy with the new game and features and are just enjoying our Paragon 2.0 points (people who haven’t played D3v2 haven’t even seen them yet).

And then after a few months, when some fans want a new challenge and feature and content and reason to powerlevel… along come the ladders!

  11. What I enjoyed about ladders in D2 was the economy reset, not so much the race to level 99.

Maybe they would consider not having every item Bind on Account in the ladders? Good riddance to the AH, but everything BOA now seems a tad extreme.

  12. BAH just BAH
diablo does not need this or pvp or HC
    more pve / endgame content

  13. As long as ladder items are aesthetic only.

  14. Just once I want Blizzard to ignore the fans, and include ladder only drops that are awesome like in D2.

Seriously, if you don’t want to play ladder, DON’T PLAY IT. But there is nothing wrong with new and cool items on the ladder side.

Hell, there should be hardcore only items too….

It’s a video game, it does not have to be fair to everyone. If someone refuses to play a game mode, that is there choice and that’s it.

They chose to not get the rewards associated with said game mode.

    Whiners….

I totally agree with that statement
