The Diablo 3 Podcast #131: Legendary (non) Drop Rate and Patch Skill Changes

Reaper of Souls beta test discussion with a focus on the very disappointing Legendary item drop rate, the new Infernal Machine, big patch skill changes, Blizzard’s D3 MVPs growing restless, EXP issues, and more. Featuring Flux, Xanth, and Wolfpaq.

Click through for full show notes and segment start times.

  • 1:30 — Blizzard Diablo 3 MVPs beginning to rebel at Reaper of Souls beta issues. Canaries in the coal mine? Has RoS gotten worse with each patch since the start of the beta?
  • 6:00 — Does it all boil down to insufficient legendary drops? Is the current system designed for long term, so it’s not super fun for a month like the Diablo 3 console, and then boring since there’s an orange/green in every slot? Why don’t less powerful Legendaries drop much more often, while higher quality ones are the super-rare?
  • 17:00 — Crafting. Should crafted sets and legendaries help gear up to Torment?
  • 19:40 — The debacle that is yellow colored Legendary Crafting mats. How to fix the item spam issue? Return to unidentified Rares? Use the icon display system?
  • 24:50 — Anyone using a build-changing Legendary item and enjoying it?
  • 29:00 — New Infernal Machine discussion. Everyone likes the new Fire Nova proc effect. Should it be something different for melee vs. ranged attackers?
  • 39:00 — Huge amount of skill changes in the recent patch. Crusader is so new and different Xanth can’t find a build he likes. Wolfpaq weighs in on Demon Hunter skills and builds, and the uselessness of ever dual wielding xbows with Quivers so much more valuable.
  • 50:00 — Frozen Orb is much improved and provides enjoyable D2 Sorc flashbacks. More variety in Wizard skills and builds now; the class is really improved in Reaper of Souls.
  • 54:00 — Experience gain woes in Reaper of Souls. Very slow leveling, no sense of character progression. Why is there nowhere designed to farm for EXP?
  • 59:00 — Why not different things to do for different purposes? Some things to do for exp, some for item finding, etc?
  • 1:04:00 — The terror that is Seigebreaker’s Reflects Damage in RoS. (This seems to have gotten a hotfix since the weekend, since it wasn’t an issue doing Ubers on Tuesday.) Reflects Damage on random Elites seems much less dangerous in RoS, though.
  • 1:10:00 — Flux checks to be sure they didn’t forget to mention that Legendary Materials are yellow and the wrong color now.
  • 1:11:11 — Final question: How optimistic are you for RoS’ quality with release in 2 months? 1-10? Wolfpaq says 2, Xanth says 5, Flux says 4.5.

    1. This is beta, and the devs just fathom the min/max boundaries of loot & skills.

    2. Great podcast as usual. Interested to see if any blues respond to the MVP thread on the main diablo3.com forums today. Hopefully it will be something other than a automated blah blah blah response.

    3. good podcast:) what is MVP? (maybe a dumb question?)

    4. I think the emphasis on MVP’s being critical is a bit overblown. They became MVPs not because they love the game so much, but because they’ve offered worthwhile critique in the past. The only requirement (or rule) that an MVP must follow is that they post with a level of quality and civility above that of the typical b.net general forums mouth-breather.

    5. Legendary drop rate is not only too low, they can still be useless. And legendary orange text now has more variability now. I cringed when I saw that legendary’s orange text has range. I will be sad if I find a legendary but its orange text rolled low. Every time more variability is added, drop rate should be increased proportionally to compensate. Otherwise it is really a stealth nerf to how fast we will be able to collect top loot.

I feel it is false advertisement during BlizzCon that they say legendaries will drop often AND will be awesome. Neither is true, AND they have also taken away trading.

I don’t understand how they can decide to nerf the Torment legendary’s drop rate even more in the latest patch.

Back in Diablo 2 and D3V, we find more uniques AND we have free trade. We are just not getting the proper compensation for losing free trade. It is so silly that people asked to lose their trade privilege but they really want better drop rate. Now they got what they asked for, but they might not get what they actually want. Where is the outcry, and is it being heard?

      • Not TORMENT legs drop rate was nerfed but TOP legs (either non-torment and torment) drop rate was lowered so the best legs are harder to obtain. Other drop rates in non-torment like in torment as well was unchanged.

    6. what, no mp3 download?

    7. Yeah, Flux, please add the MP3 link.

      • Added the mp3 in. It’s weird, since I know I had it in the editing version. File was already uploaded, but somehow a non-final version of the post went live, since all the google search boxes and such weren’t filled in anymore either. Not that any of you guys care about such things…

    8. Yeah, Flux, please add the MP3 download link.

    9. Was expecting more in-depth discussion on legendary materials being yellow. Very disappointing.

    10. I agree with your Peyton sentiments but Brady is far worse with his whining for a flag every time he gets touched. Go Seahawks! I’m a Ravens fan tho… anyway… great podcast! I just started listening to them about two months ago and I’m surprised at how entertaining and informative these podcasts are. Kudos! Keep up the great work!

    11. Hey! Just want to start off by saying great podcast. I’m an avid listener, usually listening to them 2-3 times over as I work a computing job all day 🙂

You guys mention D2 a lot for comparison, and it actually made me go play some D2 Lod, and I must say, I’m having a pretty great time. Naturally I was rushed immediately, then did some trist runs and levelled to 16, and did an Andy run. First Andy drop included the o-so-familiar Dimoak’s Hew, probably the unique we have all seen the most, and even though it had nothing to do with my light sorc, it felt so dam good to see that drop. Just like its been mentioned in the past few podcasts, the items dropping really don’t _have_ to be always tuned towards a character, or be a stellar build changing item, its just nice to know the uniques ARE dropping, and it fuels the next few runs to find the ones I do need. It’s awesome to have that _consistant_ feeling that there are uniques that _could_ drop that change the game for you no matter what level you are, and make the beginning/mid game worth playing. I haven’t ever felt like that during D3. Needless to say, I’m back on D2 – never thought it would happen, but it is.

I did the same thing. I loaded 1.12a and using D2multires to play at 1024×600 and having a blast with my Sorc. It’s actually fun to play after all the times I thought I was tired of it.. *sigh*
