Diablo 3 Monster EXP and Item Drops Nerfed (a bit) in v1.0.8

Blizzard mentioned in the DiabloWikiPatch 1.0.8 notes that lots of monsters, mostly in Acts 1 and 2, had their experience and drop rates turned down a bit. There’s been debate about this in the forum, after so many months of Acts One and Two being useless, but I think the Devs’ logic is pretty obvious.

They wanted Acts 1-3 to be (roughly) equivalent in value, in v1.08. Act 3 got no buffs in monster density, and got a debuff in exp value when scorpions were nerfed a bit. Acts 1-2 got a 2-3x buff in monster density, thus the exp/item value for those monsters had to be turned down some, or else Acts 1-2 would have become vastly more profitable than Act 3. You could argue that such a fate was justified and deserved, after the past inequities suffered by the lands of Tristram and Caldeum, but the devs wanted balanced variety of Acts. Hence nerfs to exp-per-monster in Acts 1 and 2.

Note that Elites still have their same guaranteed drops, so the item drop changes below apply only to trash mobs.

Experience granted by the following monsters has been reduced to better match their HP:

By 75% for:

  • Brood Hatchlings, Cavern Spiders, Spiderlings, Stygian Crawlers, and Tormented Stingers
  • By 60% for:

  • Accursed, Betrayed, Blazing Ghouls, Ghouls, Murderous Fiends, Reviled, Savage Fiends, and Vicious Ghouls
  • By 50% for:

Bile Crawlers, Crazed Cultists, Crazed Summoners, Dark Conjurers, Dark Cultists, Dark Summoners, Dark Zealots, Deranged Cultists, Doom Wraiths, Enraged Zealots, Fallen, Fallen Grunts, Fallen Peons, Fallen Soldiers, Foul Conjurers, Ravenous Dead, Shade Stalkers, Shadow Vermin, Skeletal Crawlers, and Spine Lashers

  • By 40% for:

  • Dark Moon Clan Impalers, Moon Clan Impalers
  • By 34% for:

  • Blazing Guardians, Charged Constructs, Chilling Constructs, Frost Guardians, Noxious Guardians, Shock Guardians, Smoldering Constructs, and Toxic Constructs
  • By 25% for:

  • Dust Shamblers, Hungry Corpses, Retching Cadavers
  • The chance for the following monsters to drop loot has also been reduced to better match their HP:

    By 60% for:

  • Accursed, Betrayed, Blazing Ghouls, Ghouls, Murderous Fiends, Reviled, Savage Fiends, and Vicious Ghouls
  • By 50% for:

  • Bile Crawlers, Crazed Cultists, Dark Cultists, Dark Zealots, Deranged Cultists, Doom Wraiths, Enraged Zealots, Fallen, Fallen Grunts, Fallen Peons, Fallen Soldiers, Ravenous Dead, Shade Stalkers, Shadow Vermin, Skeletal Crawlers, and Spine Lashers
  • By 40% for:

  • Dark Moon Clan Impalers, Moon Clan Impalers
  • By 34% for:

  • Blazing Guardians, Charged Constructs, Chilling Constructs, Frost Guardians, Noxious Guardians, Shock Guardians, Smoldering Constructs. and Toxic Constructs
  • By 25% for:

  • Brood Hatchlings, Cavern Spiders, Crazed Summoners, Dark Conjurers, Dark Summoners, Dust Shamblers, Fallen, Fallen Grunts, Fallen Peons, Fallen Soldiers, Foul Conjurers, Hungry Corpses, Retching Cadavers, Spiderlings
  • There’s discussion of this in the forums as well, but my experience thus far in v1.08 has been of much greater profits (in exp and items and fun) running Acts One and Two than I was getting in Act Three in v1.07. The monster density is nice, the content is easier (Act 1 especially feels at least 1 MP lower in diff than Act 3) and it’s great to have something different to farm.

You guys may have drawn different conclusions, and we’re going to post a vote to rate initial v1.08 impressions and experiences. Probably early next week, to give everyone some time to test it out over the weekend.

    1. Fuck those losers

    2. I love reading all the constructive criticism that certain “fans” are voicing here! Gives me a warm & fuzzy feeling inside:)

Seriously, this should be a topic/point in the upcoming anniversary article that flux is planning to post! How hard some people seem to have to just quit and move along, there are plenty of other games out there which could bring out their positive writing skills …

      • I followed Diablo 3 development for more than 5 years reading all of Flux’s updates. Even if I stopped playing Diablo 3 because of all of the games shortcomings, it’s hard not to follow the latest news when I’ve been doing it for so long.

        • Exactly, stopped playing long ago but still open this site up out of habit. (wasn’t it diabloii.net at some point?). I’m loyal to the sites I’ve bookmarked in the past. Followed diablo news for so long that just because they completely botched this game doesn’t mean I no longer hope things get completely overhauled and fixed.

          • yea, back a little while before diablo 2 came out i joined this site, when it was diabloii.net… i can’t see not checking it, even when im on a diablo hiatus.

          • I’ve been playing the last couple of nights. Gameplay is out of this world awesome!!!! For all the things they stuffed up gameplay is certainly not one of them. I just wish they put in an itemisation system that is even a shadow of POE. Such a bloody shame. I’m playing self found but at higher MP levels the drops a just too low. Its very difficult playing knowing the global drop rates have been purposefully lowered because of the AH, therefore you know your wasting time.

        • glad i’m not the only one who does this.

it’s still fascinating to watch such a successful, powerful, reputable game developer as blizzard screw up so badly, over and over and over

      • Lol. As the guy who wrote the post that ended up linked here, let me just ask everyone one question. If you were to reduce your XP bonuses to whatever they were prior to the alteration of how XP stacks, would you make more or less XP when doing something other than Act 3 than you would in 1.07 Act 3?

In other words, ignore the improved bonuses from stacks and +XP gear and just focus on the enemies themselves.

So if you were getting 500% XP before, alter your setup so you get 500% now. Then try it.

I suspect that if people do this rather than misassign credit they’ll realize they should just stick to act 3 after all.

      • We talked about the community stuff on the podcast last night (several coming up this week) and how/why the Diablo community seems to be so much more negative than virtually any other gaming community. Certainly far more than WoW or SC.

I don’t know if it’s overall more negative, or if the bitter un-fans of D3 are just much more noisy and committed to making sure everyone knows how unhappy they’ve chosen to be, but D3 has certainly generated more haters than you’d reasonable expect for the best selling PC game of all time, by a very successful developer, that’s been patched and supported extensively, for free, for more than a year since release.

    3. Even with the nerfs to xp and drops it is still a net gain to overall XP and drops in areas due to the amount of mobs now.

    4. the areas I have run so far at mp10 all drop.roughly the same loot per hour. there are way more monsters in all areas, which is awesome for my barb. brawler passive increases dps by 30% when 3 monsters are close, so the buff Is up pretty much always.

coop.health scaling is a huge improvement for farm speed, but I am finding groups splitting up becaus even at mp10, stuff dies so fast it is hard to land a hit on trash in a good group.

playing through all quests is still inefficient. too much downtime from cutscenes. best to start games at the last quest and hit all the “good” waypoints.

      • Which are all the “good” waypoints? I am especially interested in act one since to me it is the most pleasing to the eye so I would really like to maximize my farming experience doing it in a beautifully designed surroundings 🙂

    5. D3 is very nice as it is. In abour 5 runs in Act 1 I got 7 set and legendary items. So now finally D3 is living up to D2 legacy.
