Diablo 3 Beta Hands On Report: Zamazi

Here’s another hands on report from Zamazi, a new tester in the Diablo 3 Beta. He wrote this one after literally one day of play time, so they truly are first impressions.

His first comment is that the game is awesome, before he goes into suggestions for improvements to a variety of game features. Here’s a quote from his forum thread; click through to read the whole thing.

3. The ordering of low level skills could use some work. Wizards get frost armor and frost nova as extra skills at level 2, which basically means they auto attack until level 3-4 where you get arcane orb. A similar problem exists with the monk, where you get blinding flash and a mantra at level 2. All classes should get some kind of second attack or spamable attack at level 2, not buffs or long cooldown spells.

4. Not enough skill slots. This wasn’t an issue i ran into with the beta, but I definitely see it happening in the future. On my witch doctor, I got great pleasure from slashing baddies in the face while using my spells. However, 6 skills and a potion slot take up all available slots, leaving no option for auto attack. This kinda sucks. If you want a dedicated potion button, add in a potion button similar to what was done with town portal, don’t take away from the existing skill bar. Or alternatively, add back the quick swap for the mouse skills. I know this was in the game at one point, but could find no reference to it in game.

All beta testers are invited to write up their own experiences and opinions with the DiabloWikiDiablo 3 beta; post them in the Diablo 3 forums and we’ll try to get them quoted on the main page as well. Impressions from the Beta

Hello Diablo Incgamers! I got into the beta on Tuesday, and played a bunch of Diablo 3 yesterday. I thought I’d share my thoughts on the game. So far, I’ve played through to the DiabloWikiSkeleton King with the DiabloWikiWitch Doctor, and about halfway through with the DiabloWikiMonk and DiabloWikiWizard. I also posted this thread on the D3 forums.

1. Its awesome. It was definitely the most fun I’ve had playing a video game in a while. The classes felt very different from each other, but each felt fairly balanced. The skill system was also a joy to use.

I did want to start with this comment, because I feel it is the most important point to take home on reading about experiences in Diablo III. Now, for some criticisms.

2. The online only requirement. Lag was a serious issue yesterday while i was in a single player game, to the point where I only played for like 5 minutes at first before giving up. Pings were about 700ms in game. I understand this is a beta, and I understand the servers were being stress tested, but I still felt like this was a totally unnecessary problem to run into.

On the bright side, the lag greatly reduced later in the day, (down to about 200ms) and was absolutely playable. Hopefully this reduction was from Blizzard fixing some issues with their servers, and this problem will not be encountered further.

3. The ordering of low level skills could use some work. Wizards get DiabloWikiFrost Armor and DiabloWikiFrost Nova as extra skills at level 2, which basically means they auto attack until level 3-4 where you get DiabloWikiArcane Orb. A similar problem exists with the Monk, where you get DiabloWikiBlinding Flash and a DiabloWikiMantra at level 2.

All classes should get some kind of second attack or spammable attack at level 2, not buffs or long DiabloWikicooldown spells.

4. Not enough skill slots. This wasn’t an issue I ran into with the beta, but I definitely see it happening in the future. On my witch doctor, I got great pleasure from slashing baddies in the face while using my spells. However, 6 skills and a potion slot take up all available slots, leaving no option for basic attack. This kinda sucks. If you want a dedicated potion button, add in a potion button similar to what was done with town portal, don’t take away from the existing skill bar. Or alternatively, add back the quick swap for the mouse skills. I know this was in the game at one point, but could find no reference to it in game.

Finally, a general comment related to the recent changes in patch 10.

5. Difficulty seemed appropriate, maybe a little on the easy side. The skeleton king fight felt equivalent to the fight against blood raven in D2. Monsters with affixes were deadly, especially to my monk who could not kite and avoid damage.

  1. You read this and you start to understand what it means when blizzard is catering to casuals aka the clueless.

    • What’s wrong with what he said? Nothing there makes him stand out as a casual. You however, come across as the stereotypical young spoiled kid of todays gamers who wasn’t even born when Diablo 1 was released. You know, complaining for complainings sake is kinda immature. 🙄

      • You are joking right.  You infer a lot about me without knowing anything what so ever.  As for spoiled kid I guarantee I am older than you so that nullifies your idiotic statement.   And the guy speaks as if he hasn’t followed or understood anything about the game up until he got beta.  And that is more than obvious from his post and that his post was the 1st of its kind.    Just read the part about wanting a spammable skill on his monk or wizard.   You get those at lvl1 you never have to use auto attack ever. And again this is the user blizzard is targeting and talks about constantly. The user that knows nothing and only plays through normal.

So don’t tell me what or who I am or what I think I deserve.  Since you are as obtuse as the original post on the forums.   Or you typical immature person who can’t see the truth for the truth.    Thankfully discussions go on there and if you read them you will see that all the posts there are in agreement. These news threads are for idiots like you to post and walk away thinking they did something important today.

  2. There is no lag unless you are from India.

Every games i’ve played in Diablo 3 my ping was below 90. I’m very happy with the ”online only” cause for now people will have to spend real money to played Diablo 3 instead of downloading it on Torrents websites.

  3. As I posted in the thread I agree with number 1 the rest I can debate or just feel he is outright wrong or doesn’t quite understand the concepts or what he is talking about.    Although perhaps as cacology pointed out (epic name btw) this is the type of user/player blizzard is gearing normal towards.

  4. so you say you need a skill button to perform auto attack? ehm… I bet it will be right click – as always

    • His wording wasn’t very clear, so let me explain. You have LMB, RMB, and 1234 to assign skills and actions to. And you have 6 skills past Clvl 24. Thus there is no way to have just plain basic attack, unless you forgo using one of your skills.

Blizzard’s theory is that you’ll never want to use plain attack since skills are always better, but their ever-shrinking number of hotkeys means that you don’t even have that option if you want it.

      • Well there is the ability to swap out RMB with another skill slot using “x” which has been stated a number of times. Effectively this gives the player 7 skill slots, so for some strange reason the player actually wishes to use auto-attack, they still can….

This has been stated many many times by Blizzard that the ability to swap is still there… The ui doesn’t make it as apparent as before though.. Which might be an issue in itself. But auto-attack away people! 😛

        • Not currently in the game, and no guarantee it will be in the final. I’d bet against seeing it; with all the other features and hotkeys and UI things they’ve removed if they weren’t simple and obvious and noob-friendly.

  5. I don’t understand where all the hate comes from for this guy. I do agree that auto-attack is pretty lame. Glad to see that go.

  6. 😐 😥 😳 😳 😳 😛 8) 😛 😡 😡 😡 😯

  7. I usually don’t post but yes, derp.  Really complaining that you don’t get another “useful” skill until level 3?  It takes like 5 minutes inbetween 2 and 3.  Insert generic game in here for the rest of your complaints, I don’t find “lag” or “it was easy lol” as talking points in a review.  Basically its already all been said and theres no point to getting anyone else’s opinion on 5% of the game.

    • you read my mind. does anyone really give a damn what first-time testers think at this point? it’s been going on for months now, there’s nothing new to comment on, it’s all the same thing.

at this point it’s more about posting articles to make the site look busy than anything else. the forum watch ain’t any better, waste of site space

  8. I don’t know if it is in the beta yet, but they have been saying for a while that they are keeping the rmb switching in (hotkeyed to x by default) but that it just won’t be obvious from the ui or whatever…

  9. Yeah I thought RMB switching was still in?
    Kinda stupid if it isn’t.

  10. I agree with most of these first impressions, with exception to deadly monster affixes… Really all the affixes currently in beta are awful, boring, and pose little to no risk. I wish I was in beta when it first came out and had a chance to experience some of those amazing arcane hydras etc. I really enjoyed the first run I did with a new class, but around the 4th and 5th class it really seemed more like a chore. It got incredibly boring and repetitive after that and I found it hard to even push myself to play all classes  to max level, which of course takes only 2-3 runs.

  11. I’m not sure I understand about the “Dedicated potion button”… I know that potions start at slot 5 or w/e, but you can drag and drop the potion icon off and replace it with another skill.

This is a legitimate point which I have made myself weeks ago. What the f*ck is the point of having a niche spell such as frost armor as low as level 2 or 3? Stuff doesn’t remotely do enough damage to ever be threatening, and you don’t yet have an arcane power spender – 1+1= bump that shit to level 16 and bring everything else down a level or so.

  13. hi,

does somebody know if there is a way for customising hotkeys?

(i find 1234 inconvinient and because there isnt so much else to hotkey i would love to do these on XFTH .Because thats where my fingers are laying when i just lay my hand on the keyboard. It would also improve reaction times for me)

    • a number of gaming keyboards have a seperate set of programmable keys for that purpose alone, usually placed on either corner of the keyboard. mine has 12, 2 columns across, 6 on each, Gxx.
