Crafting Materials Management Changes

Blizzard first posted this back on 13 February over a month before release but now RoS has landed and people are finding their stride the issue of crafting material management has surfaced once more. RoS didn’t bring any of the improvements mentioned back then but Blizzard are still working on getting them into the game.

Another update today reiterates what changes are likely to appear

We’ve been working on streamlining the crafting resource management system, and some of your suggestions are the kind of things we’re looking at. I’m going to quote one of my previous posts about this to highlight some of that info again.

Let me preface what I’m about to say with the caveat that any changes we make to crafting material management will come sometime down the road, but we don’t have a time frame to share at this point.

  • All crafting materials would be moved to a currency-style storage in the UI. Think something similar to Blood Shards.
  • All crafting materials would become auto pickup, except for LEGENDARY crafting material. (Legendary crafting material would still be automatically stored as a currency, but players must click on it to pick it up.)
  • All crafters would pull crafting materials from this storage area for recipes.
  • Crafting materials that the player doesn’t currently own would appear in grey text with a 0 counter.
  • Players could mouse over the icons of all crafting material to get the full tooltip of the item. This includes greyed out ones.
  • Currently, we do not intend to store gems in this way because it would make socketing items feel clunky.

I don’t know about everyone else but my stash gets full pretty quickly as I save up items for other characters and of course gems which take up an inordinate amount of space for what they are so freeing up the half a tab the materials currently occupy will be very welcome.

I don’t know the reason why legendary mats would not auto pick up but all others do.

  1. Probably the reason they would want you to click on the Leg materials is so that people see them as Legendary drops and it registers that you got them. If they were auto-pickup then people might not realize that they were getting the drops.

That being said, I am excited to see the auto-pickup for this stuff, will make some of the Treasure Goblin aftermaths a little faster 🙂

  2. Yeah, I’d be sad if they had auto-pickup on leg mats, since the CLANG and the ground visual is fun. Then again, you get that now with shards and they pick up auto.

I like the idea in general; are they going to up the max stacks to infinity? Or will it be like shards today, where you’re at 475 and 50 drop from a Rift Guardian and you find yourself dribbling 25 clanging purple across the level as auto-pickup chokes with 500 already in your possession? I’d hate to do that with other materials, especially as you can’t easily spend 50 or 100 of them just to clear out some bank space.

  3. And not a single mention of Rift Frags, the most useless item/inventory waste ever. You can’t craft w/ them, you can’t socket them, you can’t trade them, you can’t do anything other than open up Rifts w/ these things, and you have to pick them up, and they only stack to 100. Seriously, this is a bigger issue than crafting materials.

  4. Does that clang even happen with legendary mats? In my experience there has been no clang or beam of light or automap marker the way it is for other legendary items. I just see the crafting icon on the floor in the legendary color. I think it should clang and then slowly get sucked into your character the way health globes do but a little slower.

Nope doesn’t happen indeed, not for the Lost Souls, or for the various Unique mob drops. Also doesn’t happen with the Keys. Does happen with the various organs for the Hellfire Ring though.

  6. About time. It will be a great improvement.

  7. The “clang/beam” effects for leg mats were there in 2.0.0 patch but was removed in 2.0.1, if i recall correctly.
Too bad, i love that sound and visual beam effect 🙂

  8. I’m glad to hear that auto-pickup & material management is in the works as well. However, I’m not sure how I will like a “bank” system for stackables. My thought is that they should add a “Bag of Gathering” instead. You would only be able to put items that stack into it, and it would then only auto-pickup the ones that are stored there. It wouldn’t be an item kept in your inventory, but rather an icon in the “paper doll” interface that is account wide. Click it to open a tab like the stash interface that can even be upgraded/increased in a similar fashion.

As a bonus feature they could let us drag/drop (or shift-click) items into it that would salvage them & automatically store the materials.

  9. If we can’t have virtual gem storage like gold and blood shards can we get a separate jewel box or some such to store them in?
