Blizzard reveals the Diablo 3 female Necromancer and more

PAX East brings some news with regards to the Necromancer and a reveal of the female Necromancer. A few skills were also detailed as the team continues to develop the class.

The game was demonstrated a the event and skills highlighted included:

  • Grim Slice – An AOE attack called Grim Slice which swings a huge scythe in an arc which grants Essence on hit,
  • Blood Nova which will cost Essence and health. Be careful not to drain too much health.
  • Devour has no resource costs and utilises corpses to gain health and Essence.
  • Blood Golem with AOE attack which can be summoned to a targetted area
  • Leech which grants health on hit.

Blizzard focused on these particular skills at this event. The guys at BlizzPlanet have whipped up a good video going over the skills which also shows more gameplay action of the new class.

Below you can see the art for the female Necromancer.

Blizzard plans to have the Necromancer out some time after PTR version 2.6 and it could be a lengthier than usual PTR session to make sure the class is well tested.

Update: Blizzard has now popped a page up on the official site which covers the above along with a very short Q&A.

Skill: Grim Scythe

Grim Scythe summons a huge scythe in a wide arc, dealing damage and restoring Essence. As a generator ability, this will be your bread and butter ability for building up to your more powerful damage dealing spells.

Skill Rune: Death Nova (Blood Nova)

Blood Nova is one of the five skill runes for the base Death Nova skill. Blood Nova does impressive damage, but this comes at a cost—using this rune requires spending both Essence and some of your Health.

Skill Rune: Devour (Cannibalize)

Devour is a resource-regeneration skill, allowing you to regain Essence by consuming the corpses of your slain foes. As one of the runes for Devour, Cannibalize also allows you to regain Health, which is handy for fueling costly spells like Blood Nova!

Skill Rune: Raise Golem (Blood Golem)

We showed a sneak peek of the Blood Golem at BlizzCon, but now he’s outfitted with animations, skills, and clever tricks! The Blood Golem is a burly companion who can sacrifice himself to heal you. Don’t worry—he’ll reconstruct himself right away, and deal sizeable amounts of damage to surrounding foes in the process!

Skill: Leech

Joining Decrepify in the Necromancer’s repertoire of curses, Leech is a dastardly spell that allows you to transfer some of the health of attacked enemies to yourself and your allies. It’s great not only for keeping yourself healthy, but offering support to your party members as well!

  1. She looks cool. Pretty sure Necro is going to have some kind of crazy HP regen skill or passives to help with the life reduction in a game where everyone gets 1 shot at high rift lvls. Probably going to be game breaking when combined with Wilderbeast’s gizzard and those death aura pants or somehting else. They’ll probably let Necros clear into the low 100s a month or two after release to boost DLC sales then nerf the shit out of the class. They pretty much do the same thing with Heroes whenever a new hero is released. Broken as hell then nerf when the price drops.

    • I had time to look at the video now. Not impressed. Like… At all. Very poor quality offering. That blood splash is a very obvious low quality rekit of the wizards wave of force and a stupid idea thematically. I mena really? Spraying blood for instant damage? It would make more sense as DoT skill. That mutant thing looks like Tyrant or Nemesis from Resident Evil and is an obvious low quality rekit of the witch doctors Gargantuan. Also thematically bad. Necros make mutants now? lol. Saving the worst for last they literally just turned the size scale waaay up on the barbs Cleave to make that scythe swing animation. Very sad, this looks like pre-alpha stuff when it’s likely beta. I don’t know if they plan to start crunching the work load on this character but if this is what they bring to market then they can count me out. Piss poor offering by the looks of things. Seems the D3 quality bar just got dragged down another notch.

      • I kinda don’t get what you’re saying, no personal offense. The Blood Golem is a Blood Golem, what can you expect after all it’s just a rune. Maybe we’ll see a badass permanent Iron Golem. This new class also offers some crazy resource management dealing with souls/whatever and life. All in all, it’s still a work in progress. I’m sure their #1 intent is to release a balanced fun class along the new areas like the Temple of the First Born.

      • You realise Blood Golem is returning from D2, right?

  2. Better than I thought it was going to be. ++

    • A crazy flashback to Diablo 2 that everyone is craving? Hells yes! I’m dying to learn the lore surrounding this class. I thought they did a good job with the Crusader, even though it was just through books. Here’s to crossing my fingers for some unique and cynical 2.5D cut scenes. I can’t wait to see the final scene of RoS. The Necromancer is a balance, how is that going to play into Ros?! *scream*

  4. This is gonna be my new main
I liked this class in D2
bring on more great stuff blizz !!

  5. Unoriginal. Therefore boring as hell. No pun intended, though.

  6. Incredibly cool, seems like a lot of resources being sunk into a new character only to play through the same five acts. It would be great at least if the end-movie for the necro was different (not just Tyrael saying “he/she is a NECROMANCER) and contained a tease to D4? Since they have a close connection to death maybe defeating the angel of death has some special meaning to them?

  7. This ain’t gone fix nothing
