  1. Notice that below the patch note there is a line saying
“If you find the play experience undersireable you may exit the game and resume this download.”
Does that means that Diablo 3 uses WoW-like patch and server system? So you can play while downloading patches, therefore the developer can constantly twink and patch the game without you knowing by changing the server base code.  Maybe this is one of the reason that Diablo is online only?

    • “Does that means that Diablo 3 uses WoW-like patch and server system?”

Yep, it seems that all B.net 2.0 games will use this updater. I just hope that they drop their incremental patch system like they did for WoW. I installed SC2 not long ago and the patching took longer than installing the base game, because it still downloads and installs the patches one by one.

      • Yeah, had the same problem recently. Downloaded the client from Blizz, was eager to play but it turns out they don’t include all patches into these online versions. I guess its too much work to incorporate every single patch and make a new build from it (or there are other reasons I’m not aware that prevent this), still its better than installing from disc. Digital distribution FTW!!

      • SC2 is a weird exception to the usual patching rule: replays only work if you replay using the exact version of the game that was used to create the replay. It might take a lot of work to get that to happen for SC2 — maybe in Heart of the Swarm?

        • SC2 is a much-awaited improvement to the usual (SC1) replay model.

Back in the old days, if the game was updated, you lost the ability to play old replays at all. SC2 caches binaries for every version, and when asked to play an old replay, reloads itself into necessary version. Not very convenient, but it absolutely works.

I guess the game is much more stable having a solid binary for each version, than it would be, if version-dependent game code would be in a detachable library to be swapped at run-time….

  2. Geez, I hope this starts soon.  Such suspense over a game is ridiculous, and yet I’m right there, myself!

(Thanks Karzon, but I mean without the background and with a better framerate. You did your best with the video though.)

  4. Every time I hear that song, I think of the ‘literal’ version of the song:

There are a ton more, some of which are just as hilarious.  Anyways, can’t wait for the beta and my first crack at D3!  I’ve been following this site for many years and it’s hard to believe it’s this close!  Stuff like this helps keep the waiting light, as opposed to those 3 month droughts we’d had not-so-long-ago…  I just hope I get into the beta 😀

“So far we don’t have any leaked client or downloader in public and it is only distributed among the moderators. I personally expect it could be shared by some ‘Hero’ within today :-)”
Hoping for the best. Who would like to be the hero, Flux?
