Battle.Net Appear Offline Functionality Being Investigated

battle.net Diablo 3 BlizzardThe ability to appear offline on Battle.Net is a feature many users have been requesting for some time and perhaps it will eventually happen thanks to Overwatch.

In a post on the Overwatch forums, Jeff Kaplan addressed the problem which would also affect Diablo 3 players.

We would like to add an “Appear Offline” option to Overwatch. We are in the process of coordinating this with Battle.net and the other game teams. Because our social system is a cross-game system (WoW, Hearthstone, Heroes, SC2, D3) adding this functionality is not trivial for us. I know there has been discussion around this feature for a long time, and things have definitely not moved at a rate which is acceptable, I can assure you we care about the feature and want to figure out how to make it happen.

  1. Lol… Not even a year after Overwatch and now they finally opened the coffee can on this feature?

As if the entire Diablo and Star Craft and Warcraft forums weren’t all asking for this, what, 6 years ago when Blizzard was bone-hard about pushing their Real ID nonsense???

Basically an “away” status that tells other’s clients to put the name into the “offline” category isn’t trivial?

To make that “not trivial”, I’m sure there wasn’t a good decision made in the coding there to the point where it renders adding such a simple and common feature into a laborious task that takes 6 years for them to finally feel motivated enough to do the grind.

    Oh, but what’s this?
“We would like to add an “Appear Offline” option to Overwatch.”
Oh, just Overwatch? Oh, haha, yea ok, whatever.

  2. Yes, please!
I play only WoW and D3, and have friends on both plus Starcraft/Hearthstone/Overwatch.
But sometimes, you just don’t feel all that social…

  3. If an internet connection is required to play a game, then an ‘Appear Offline’ mode ought to be mandatory.
