Yes, both feet on the fat penguin (link posted in previous message) look similar in colour, but the feet of the evil penguin are different. What does it MEAN?

So with the 5th rune looking very much like a simple reference to Blizzard, it's looking more like the 4th one referred simply to the three Blizzard universes. And with the eyes in the center still vague enough to be anything, it looks like a classic case of giving us just enough material to make anything we want. All it needs is a clickable gem.

Yes, I've avoided reading any of the Warcraft / Starcraft / WOW forums, where I am sure people are posting very detailed and "confirmed" reasons explaining why the splash images are about Warcraft / Starcraft / WOW! How disappointed will we all be if there is nothing about D2? It kinda is D2's turn though -- the other universes have had all the attention (and a lot of it) since the release of LOD.

Personally, I think they're tricking us into speculating about D3 so that we'll be all the more surprised by the real announcement - D2 patch 2.0! All known dupes and TPPKs are fixed! All demon-type monsters are now immune to Blessed Hammer! And best of all... now supports 1024x768!

What worries me is what I first thought were Diablo's horns either side of the eyes, now looks like the vapour coming off the eyes of the Lich King. And that faint outline in the centre of his head could be the detail on his helmet. The eyes are the same angle for D2 and Lich King. Check the overlays.

All the runes are clearer now, and the first day's rune is quite obviously from Frostmourne.

Anyway since the rune is a Viking Compass and the number of the tiled jpg's (04 08 15 16 23 42) are the Lost number sequence Blizzard are pulling our legs with the 'Lost Vikings' allusions. I just wonder if an Evil Penguin features in that game at all.

From a cold icy northern cavern (home of lich king) an evil being (lich king) will signal the approach of another.

As pointed out in brackets that refers to the Lich King, but the Lich King is not the announcement, he's merely the means of conveying the message of what is to come....

Blizzard chose the Lich King to be the 'messenger' just cause a) they can b) its the next thing that will be released on their schedule, so its an obvious choice.

So there you have it, pretty simple. There are no clues as to what the actual announcement will be, its simply a creative way to let us know something is coming... nothing more nothing less.

Firstly: I don't play WoW, I'm going by the Wiki. But ... I am really worried even more now. What I thought were horns could be steam from the around the Lich helm. He has a central piece on his helm. Too.

Why are you so set on it beeing the lich king?

Making such a huge fuzz about something everyone allready know everything about just doesn't make sense... at all. That and it has been confirmed that a new game will be announced. At least if we can believe what's been said, and a lot of info from this site I would consider reliable. An expansion to a game allready existing is not a new game announcement.

Besides this whole thing can just mean absolutely nothing, and is only there to entertain us until the WWI starts.

Around the outside of the ideal area of the face/head.. i kinda see a redish tent that could perhaps if outlined correctly could become a cloak..

This may sound stupid, but does anyone else think the small dots around the eyes look like stars? I realize it's supposed to be small pieces of ice falling away but just wanted to mention it.

OK guys this is obviously WOW artwork, or at least made to come off that way, I didn't want to believe it myself. But after carefully researching the look of the lich king I came across a startling discovery.. this is the same artwork that is on the world of warcraft page. I really hope this is a trick and blizzard makes diablo 3, but everything adds up for this to be WOW xpack release. Look here:

I hate to say this, but I have to agree with Thy that the resemblance to the Lich King is undeniable. Only the Soulstone part which was mentioned does make sense, only I think if the picture becomes clearer the sharp downward point will flatten out to complete the headgear of the Lich King. This ofcourse doesn't take away the possibility that the LK might be the means of a message.

I'm not singling you out, I would say the same to other saying it's a WoW release date thing, but you are the one I've seen most frequently saying it's WoW.

Btw why do I loose credibility with The Lost Vikings thing? If I'm not misstaken the last rune is a compass from The Lost Viking game. So in that splash image we have refferences to Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo and The Lost Vikings. Seeing as an expansion has allready been announced, spending a week doing that splash image and hidden stuff just for a release date for something we all know is coming doesn't make sense. It's a huge waste of time. That and if you read some of the other threads here it's been said that there will be a new game announced, which would make sense in comparison to the splasher, the hidden images and all this rumor stuff going on.

Besides if you look closely on the image it can't be Arthas unless his helmet changed from the image that was used as refference to point out that it could be him. The helm doesn't match that of the image in the splasher.

But, Wrath of The Whatever has already been announced. Already there is no written rule on what can and can't be put on a splash image. Would be pretty dissappointing, though.

Well, since this is Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 forums, I would get surprised if everybody was trying to find proof for the Lost Vikings or SC2.

Ofc they can change it, but all I said is that if there is a reference to WC it won't be through that image since it doesn't match. Besides who says it's a helm? For all we know it could be something completely different.

We arn't only looking for D3 references. It's been uncovered references to all of Blizzards main games, so why could it not be solved on a D2 forum? It's just like saying it can't be solved on a SC forum or WoW forum since everyone is only looking for references to "their" game.

Yup, meant to include that in my previous post - but used the "quick reply feature" only to discover i could not edit my post. Also last year kerrigan was at the center and starcraft 2 was announced. This year the big D is at the center, so we can only hope d3 is announced. And, as far as the splashes go, my guess - they could be any of the blizz games - just take any splash image and invert its colors (in paint for example), and you have a more Diablo-esque image.

Not to mention the irrecoverable credibility loss of the Admins when there wouldn't be anything D3 related at all. A significant portion of this site is now dedicted to it.

Now I cannot find the link, but this penguin is the trademark of one of Diablo II's artists that also did some voiceover work. He did the Fallen voices (RAKINISHU!) and a lot of the art for D2 and D2:LOD.

The old penguin looks "cool" and friendly and this certain artist has just been re-employed at Blizzard a few months ago.

Could this be continuing the "fallen hero" theme from Diablo 1? Perhaps it's, say, a possessed paladin or necro or something. I know Tyrael ports the hero to a "place of rest" at the end of the D2 story but you never know. That would explain why it's not so diablo-esque. The Wanderer didn't look like diablo either.

This need not be the Lord of Terror, it could be something else plot-critical to a potential diablo 3 without us ever having heard of it. Anyways, wasn't the soul-stone created by the angel that created sanctuary, to restrict the powers of the half-angels half-demons he made, and they became humans? Wouldn't the destruction of the world-stone then mean the humans gain their previous powers back? I don't know, just speculation. But if this isn't diablo himself, it certainly doesn't falsify the chances of it being Diablo 3, especially since it last Diablo game culminated at an icy mountain peak..

Not to be a zoologist, but several people have said it, so I have to point out that penguins are exclusive to the southern hemisphere. About the furthest north you'll find them is New Zealand, or the tip of Chile. conversely, polar bears are exclusively northern; only found in russia, canada, alaska, etc.

Obviously there are icy caves and all the rest near the south pole, but penguins are never near the north pole, or europe or north america. zoos notwithstanding.

Not that such shortcomings of earth's ecosystem have to limit the type and location of creatures in blizzard's gaming worlds. And if there were giant purple evil penguins, I imagine they'd live anywhere they wanted to.

Not just concept art. He made and designed pretty much all the models you see in the game.

But ze penguin is not drawn by Dashow, as some speculated.

He also used a walrus as a 'trademark' not a penguin.

The only Blizzard games I've played are D1, D2 and LOD, so I don't know much about the other universes. Having said that, the announcement at WWI is, we presume, about a new game.

Warcraft 3 has effectively was "absorbed" into/by World of Warcraft and one expansion has already been released and the second has already been announced. Would Blizzard announce the release of Wrath at WWI? That can't be considered a new game though -- assuming that the information about a new game is correct.

StarCraft II has already been announced and is in development. StarCraft Ghost is dead. Announcing the release of StaftCraft II is also not a new game.

Would Blizzard have developed a fourth universe? I can't see it somehow. D1, D2 and LOD were hugely successful for Blizzard. I think it unlikely that they would develop a fourth universe, even if such a universe resembled Diablo. They would stick with what they know works.

Based on this -- and assuming the announcement is about a new game -- it is difficult to accept that it will NOT be D3! Besides, WWI is about more than just ONE game announcement. What's happening the rest of the time? WOW- and SC-related stuff surely. Therefore, that covers those universes.

Or is it all just wishful thinking. If only Blizzard was as dedicated to sticking to release dates and fixing bugs as they are to driving the media machine...

ok personaly i think this picture that keeps getting revealed has nothing to do with D3..but i think at WWI it will be announced. It looks more to me like that thing from Star Craft. i dont really play starcraft but thats just what it lookes like to me.

Further to my previous post ... I am really puzzled by the release of Patch 1.12a:

[1] Why release a patch at this time, right before WWI? I doubt Blizzard just releases patches on the spur of the moment. Patch 1.11b (c?) was released many, many months (years?) ago. All of a sudden we have a patch.

[2] Why make a no-CD patch? It smacks of making a patch for the sake of making a patch. Instead of a real patch that fixes bugs (and possibly breaks other features or introduces new bugs), a pseudo-patch is released that allows gameplay without the CD. Why would Blizzard do that at all, and why now?

[3] The initial release of every previous patch has been labeled with numbers only and no letters. This is the first patch to be released with a letter attached: 1.12a.

Blizzard knows how to hype their fans and generate interest and they "play" us as much as we play their games.

Yeah, Blizzard drives us all nuts with their little games and such... At least Square, Enix, and now Square Enix are reliable to keep chugging out great games and not delay them... Same thing with Konami and the Castlevania series...

Imagine this:

D3 gets announced, and a teaser trailer gets released a la SC2.
Instead of a marine saying "Hell, its about time..." you have Tyreal saying "Hell. It's about time..."

More than anything, that picture of the WWI poster or sign this year got me hyped up.. Diablo wasn't even in last years, and now all the sudden he is in the center of their sign, and bigger than the warcraft and starcraft characters... I hope I don't get let down, but I am really hopeful.

The eyes look like anything but Diablo, they resemble a lot more protoss than any D character. It also looks like an protoss archon.

After all the websites I've read through and the hundreds of debates of whose eyes we're looking at this is my opinion:

The "eyes" are intentionally ambiguous! Like the glyphs that surround them in their pentacle, they relate to all three of Blizzard's universes. I believe that, as pointed out by many other people, the final image will link the 5 glyphs as a pentagram and Diablo's face will at last be visible.

I was looking at the artwork on the product catalog from blizzard and the image looks like the lich king b/c theres a shape in the middle above the eyes that resembles the artwork from the catalog cover. Is it an exact match? No but the image on the splash most likely was altered or remade anyways. I really don't think the slash image is Diablo related but, that doesn't mean Diablo 3 won't be announced, hopefully it will. It also resembles Starcraft as well as there is a design on the head similar to what's shown in the splash as well. Reguardless of what it is, Blizzard did this right, they created buzz and that's great marketing.

I think they are overlayed. One over the other. Lich King, Protoss, and Diablo.

Yes ice may imply WotLK, but it's clearly receding (or melting). Info has been available about WotLK which is why it started as ice, but it's time for something new to emerge. Fire melts ice, and from what I've seen big D's no stranger to fire.

t's kind of obvious that the splash page on blizzard is WoWLK expansion it's even on the WoW page if you go to worldofwarcraft.com you get the same thing. The eyes are clearly that of Arthas so there's no doubting it that it's just an ad for WoWLK a sort of countdown till something.

about the no cd patch recently released. it could me a marketing ploy for d3.

more people get into the diablo universe then more people are interested and buy D3.
i know that could be a little unlikely due to the rule that no more than one of the same cd key can be online at a time but that wouldnt stop the second person from playing offline. and if they are announcing a D3 then they would be less interested in selling more D2 games (that you can get pretty cheap) and more interested in getting more people that will eventually buy D3, more money for them in the long run.

and as for the splash art. i could picture diablo coming the the background, but there are many other characters in diablo so i dont see why it would have to be the lord of terror himself. maybe something like baal got a pice of the worldstone in his forehead, was revived and is breaking out of an icy cave in act 5. or diablo is digging him out.

or the splash image could have nothing to do with diablo and its just something to get people hyped up.

i can only hope they annouce d3, just for them to admit they're working on it and give a few pictures/videos would make me happy.

im not looking for anyone to agree or disagree with me on this stuff... they're just thoughts. everyones free to think what they want and thats probably what blizzard hopes. everyone will think its about something they've been waiting for and get excited so they can get attention from players in all their game worlds and not just a few.

Diablo 3 or something new, or they just lost their license to interest me in anything they are up to until it's announced and I read about it.

I don't know if this theory has been brought up, but I went to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_non-player_characters_in_Diablo to read up on my lore...is it at ALL possible, that this relates to the story behind Inarius and his Sanctuary that was hidden by the Worldstone? I think it would be a GREAT place to start with Diablo 3.

In addition, we never see what happens to Tyrael, so I believe he has taken up Inarius' Nephalem as a fallen angel, to lead his crusade against heaven.

Blizzard knows exactly what they're doing. A great tactic, but could fail miserably if D3 isn't announced. Which i suspect it will be announced this year reguardless, either at WWI or another event. D3 will be made, just a matter of when. Too much money to be made. Have to figure it won't be out for at least 2 years imo, unless they have been working on it secretly for some time now which doesn't seen likely going by job posts, team 3 ect, not to mention their other projects.

after all the hype last year im not counting chickens before they hatch lol.....
i really do hope so but i think the only thing that will be mentioned tomorrow will be about the reset and update ;(

evilpenguin is an anagram, take the letters and rearrange them to say "unveil" and you have "P" and "E" left, which if you rotate 180 degrees, you get d3, for a total phrase "unveil d3"

It's amazing how desperate some of you are for this to be diablo 3. He's got 3 fingers? Guess, what: When the expansion gets released, WoW will go to 3.0.

I hope D3 is coming myself; but none of the signs point to D3 - they point to something entirely new: and considering the WWI is about PVP; I'm going with a new MMO PVP game (based on Starcraft Ghost - which does fit).
