12 Jan - Berserk spell - Fabrice Echelard

The berserk spell is made to be cast on a monster. That monster will have its attack and damage augmented as it goes berserk and attacks anything (player or monsters) that is near it. Nice to cast on monsters running in pack but mostly useless against monsters which are magic resisting or immune. Works pretty well on some of goatmen and the acid beasts.
12 Jan - Armor of Gloom - Kurdran+

As I was checking on the unique description for the Armor of Gloom, this thought dawned on me: at 255 ac and no strength requirements, this armor will give the monk his highest possible ac. One small thing though, don't id the armor if u find it, all resists to 0 and -20 light radius is terrible in hell. Instead, just click here and remember what the armor of gloom looks like if you should ever chance upon it.

8 Jan - Obsidian ring of Zodiac - Norm AKA Sir Crunion

I have found that Obsidian ranges from 32 - 40% resist all and the Zodiac ranges from 16 - 20 points.  There is also Emerald out there that ranges from 41 -40 {all I found so far} resist all.  I have never found better than Zodiac for all attributes YET.
8 Jan - The uniques I found and where - Ernie

I have been playing Hell mode 4 times with my initial level 34 warrior and now have reached level 42.  In all the games, I have averaged 10 unique items {inclusive of the uniques gained from quests} and finding a maximum of 13 unique items in one game.   Has anyone got more?

The only 'new' unique items that I have found is the Gladiator's Ring and the Acolyte's Amulet.  I'm still playing to find special items, especially the Obsidian ring of Zodiac and the dream of dreams, King's sword of Haste {Bastard sword version}.   Thanks for reading.
8 Jan - Bovine Plate - Ernie

I have completed the Jersey's Jersey quest the second time and got the Bovine Plate again {I love that plate} and as soon as I have received it I removed the command.txt file from Hellfire's directory and proceeded to thrash Diablo's butt in Hell mode.  I restarted a new game and surprise, surprise - the Bovine Plate is still there.  Yummy!   Just letting everyone know.
7 Jan - Monk AC - Kurdran+

We've all found out that the monk's main problem is that he can't use medium or full armor without loosing AC. Before, someone mentioned that with the Bovine plate this hindrance is less, but didn't know why. The reason for this is that when the monk uses armor, the strength requirement is subtracted somehow from the ac. Since the bovine plate has lower than usual str requirement, this plate is useful for a monk.

Also, Arkaine's valor or Naj's light plate is great for a monk, since there's no strength requirement (and you can wear medium armor, ooohhhhh!)

7 Jan - Search ability/Monk's attack - Sabre

The search has cumulative duration.  If is often useful, as the Monk, to use search thirty or more times in a row when you enter a level....it will last you throughout.

The Monk can parry with a staff in a manner similar to a warrior having a shield.   This applies to magical and physical attacks.  He also has the ability to hit three monsters with one swing.  If there are two monsters right angels attacking you, it is often useful to shift-attack the square between them, thereby attacking them both.
6 Jan - Bard items - Ben Croswell

I am not sure if anyone has mentioned the fact that the Bard character can wield 2 weapons, instead of weapon/shield if they choose.  It adds the damage of the 2 weapons together, and may account for the "hitting 2 monsters" people have see with the Bard.  This makes for some interesting combos in my mind.
6 Jan - Bard tips - Flux

To get the Bard an Auric's amulet, just delete the "cowquest" from your command.txt file, start a new game, and snap it up. You can always retype those 8 characters (9 with the semicolon) later, which I did, since the moose-suit quest is the funniest in the game by far. Leaving an Auric's amulet on the Cornerstone will not work, or at least it didn't for me. I just found 100 gold there next game, which is fair, since that is the price of a new amulet, based on the selling price of
25 gold.

I would recommend NOT Id'ing the cow plate. Like the Goddamnitsdark helmet, the id'ed attributes wreck the huge AC boost from the item. Cow plate is the best armor you're likely to find for quite a while, so enjoy it, but the benefits from having it id'ed are not worth the -1 to spell levels, unless you've just been a duping fiend with the books and have the important ones (fireball, chain, and the fun/novelty ones, immolation, nova, apocalypse) to lvl 12 or something.

The bard is meant to be played as a mage type char, with the bonus of having better attack skills balanced by the far lower magic/mana. Still, with 120 magic and a few levels under her belt, she can set up mana shield and protection and do hell/hell with NP, providing you have some decent resistance. My Bard is lvl 31 and has over 450 mana, and my items are crap for magic+, with the exception of my wizardspike and one
drakes/sorcery ring.

Also, the big damage of 2 weapons at once is tempting, but a shield in one hand is such a large AC boost, not to mention the blocking ability it adds, that I'd recommend against going samurai-style unless you have found awesome full plate and a royal circlet or something. My obsidian/wolf tower shield is much better than adding a few more points to my damage, since I'm using 90% magic anyway.

One other point, what are the best and most expensive items people have seen Gris/Wirt selling? I got a crimson/zod ring today, 31/20, for about 76K from gris, and my monk has a KS(taff)OH, 8-16, that was around 100K. Both bought when the char buying was around lvl 30, btw.

I had hoped that with the ability to carry up to 340K for armor buying (340 since 6 spots must be open to buy, understand?) there would be godly/whales or the like offered, but I've not seen anything more expensive than some gothic plate for 132k from Gris, and NOTHING even worth looking at from Wirt so far. Pegleg's failure to offer me anything decent so far is my biggest disappointment on Hellfire.

One other thing, aside from cheating/duping, the best way to score money/items/experience is to get a decently strong char (lvl 28+?) and start new games and head to hell/hell. The Warlord of Blood quest on lvl 13 is far and away the best quest in the game, both since it's easy to find, (he's always in the northern corner) and because you get items galore. Also, all monsters are boosted in exp on single-player Hellfire, but Steel Lords are the best. 120K per on hell/hell, as compared to the 10K for my old lvl 50 rogue on Diablo (legit, thanks for asking =) All the other hell/hell creatures are worth a ton too, from 50k each up, so even if you have to retreat and save a lot and play with some real skill, you will level up madly, and of course gain more damage/hps/mana with every level up when you are bigger.

6 Jan - New booby-traps - Sabre

There are new traps which did not appear in Diablo. The ones I have seen either mess around with the items in your belt (taking some away and modifying others, such as full mana becomes just mana), sap your life or mana orbs, or cast a ring of fire around you.
6 Jan - Glowing shrine - Paul R

Just some more news on the glowing shrine that may be of use.  My Monk character went from 11891803 exp to 11297212 and the magic score went from 141 to  146, nothing else changed.
6 Jan - Bard attack - Michael Llewellyn

I have experimented with the Bard and have a level 39 Bard now.  Following up on Christophe
r Weber's Bard attacks, yes, the Bard can attack up to 3 monsters at once.

One thing to be aware of though. The bard can only do this multiple attack if she is using 2 of the same weapons. I haven't experimented with anything other than swords, but presume it would work as long as both weapons were the same (2 flails, 2 maces, etc.). If you mix weapons (sword and mace, sword and flail, etc.) you don't get the bonus of hitting multiple monsters. I currently use a kings sword of titans, and a kings sword. She has a 315% to hit, and does 116-182 damage! I am very impressed with the bard! I highly recommend finding a weapon of haste (I'm still looking!!!) as the Bard's attack isn't too fast.

5 Jan - Uniques - Jim

I have been playing for about 2 weeks and I too, have not found many uniques as others are saying.  Here's what I have found though:  Gladiator's Ring twice, both in Laz's Tomb; Ring of Thunder in dungeon level 3; and Acolyte's Amulet in Laz's Tomb.
5 Jan - Unique Mana Potion - Jeff Issac

I have found a strange item.  It is a unique mana potion.  In the 'dashboard' it says it is a unique indestructible item, but on the left where it shows the unique stats, it says it's a Butchers' Cleaver.   All the stats are 0 though.  I did try fighting with it but you can only hold it in your inventory.  I just keep it for the novelty.

5 Jan - Transferring using CoW - Danny

I haven't had the problems that Riona mentions in her post.  All that needs to be done to transfer items between characters is for one character to put the desired item on the cornerstone, leave the crypt, save game, exit.  New character loads his/her game, goes to the cornerstone and the item is there.  It is necessary that each character leave the crypt area before saving and exiting the game.

The only problem I've encountered is that some books will not transfer.  Instead the second character picks up a rejuvenation potion, not a book.
5 Jan - Getting Diablo's Goodies - Peter Dimpudus

You probably noticed that Diablo drops an item from time to time when you kill him, but you can never get it because the screen is 'frozen'.  Well, now there is a way to get it.

This is what you do:

- Make sure you hae enough open space in your inventory
- Create a town portal near Diablo's Lair
- Lure Diablo out with Holy Bolt
- Kill him :)
- While Diablo is gushing blood click on the item {you will not move} and quickly save the current game.
- Enjoy the end movie
- Now you load the game you just saved
- You will see Diablo spray blood, but this time your character will move and pick up the item.  When he has it get the hell into the town portal.

BTW, the only way to get back to Diablo is via the town portal, the entrance to Diablo in level 15 is closed.

5 Jan - Eater of Souls - Marc C

I found a unique sword called Eater of Souls in normal difficulty, level 13.  One of those drakes gave it to me.
5 Jan - Sparkling Shrine - Peter Dimpudus

I think I know what determines the amount of experience you receive from a sparkling shrine, namely the level you are currently in.  You get 1000 xp in level 1, 2000 xp in level 2, etc.  I verified this in levels 2, 3 and 14.
4 Jan - Gladiator's Ring - Sabre

I just found the Gladiator's Ring in Hellfire, and I was thinking...it doesn't seem to make much sense that the Gladiator's Ring gives you mana, while the Acolyte's Amulet gives you health.  What would a gladiator want with mana?  An acolyte would want mana.
4 Jan - Gladiator's Ring - Warhawk

I found a Gladiator's Ring in Hell {Level 14?} - nothing special in the circumstances, just killed a Knight {Steel Lord, I think}.  I picked up the Gnatsting bow in Archbishop Lazarus' Lair when I smote one of the witches.

The Uniques are sorely missing in the new levels.
4 Jan - Oil of Fortitude - Ben

I used the Oil of Fortitude on a Thinking Cap and it went from durability 1/1 to 45/45.  This change will stay if you make a new game.  It may not be the best helmet but if you need it because of your Bovine Plate now being unusable.
4 Jan - Diamondedge Sword - Tom Colbey

While fighting and defeating Sir Gorash the Black Knight Captain in multiplayer mode, I received the Diamondedge Sword. Until I found this site, I thought this was the most powerful new unique item.

4 Jan - Bard's multi-attack/weapons - Christopher Weber

I observed 2 things that may be interesting playing the bard :

- the bard can attack at least 2 monster with one attack ; I´m not quite sure if he can attack 3 or 4 monsters like the monk.

- if you play with 2 one-handed-weapons and one of them has damage-bonus (savage sword or master´s blade for example ) , the bonus is added to the base-damage of BOTH weapons !! imagine you play with 2 king´s swords ..... :-)))

4 Jan - Decay suffix - Nazeroth

I just found a Strange Bow of Decay in Hellfire.  Decay seems to be equal to Merciless except it's a suffix instead of a prefix.  They I had was +156% damage.
4 Jan - Oil of Hardening - Sabre

1. Oil of Hardening doesn't work on the Bovine Plate?
2. The Bovine Plate provides the Monk with 110AC, though it's supposed to be ineffective on him, being heavier than leather.  Why 110, not 150 or 0?
4 Jan - Uniques - Captain G

My request for info on uniques got a lot of responses and I now see it's being asked by a lot more people than previously thought.  Do we have a name for all the new unique rings, amulets, words, etc.  I see that there are four new armors...Demon Plate, Bone Mail, Bovine Plate...and if you bought Hellfire then you'll see another armor, looks like hard leather armor?  I count 9 amulets, 12 new rings, 5 new swords, 2 new axes, 2 new hammers, one new mace, 2 new staves, and two new bows.  Can anyone tell me what the thing is on the back of the Hellfire box besides the new bows?  Looks like some kind of stone, unless that's supposed to represent the runes.

Thanx for everyone's replies...keep looking and good luck!

4 Jan - Uniques - Adrian Lee

I am a level 24 Bard venturing in Normal difficulty level 12 caves when I found the Gnatsting by opening one of the treasure boxes.

Frankly I don't believe there is a likely place where one can find good weapons or unique items.  But in my humble opinion, more can be found in caves and hell than dungeons and catacombs.  The jewelry found in dungeons are usually very low in attributes, e.g. Ring of the Sky +3 to All Attributes.
2 Jan - Immortal - almost - Hendrik

Anyone ever tried a Warrior {mine's level 29} with full attributes, the Bovine Plate, Veil of Steel and a {Broad} Sword of Blood, and some complementary jewelry?

I pretty much ran through the game like this and almost never had to use healing.   True you don't have any mana {something like 13} but if you like chasing those witches, this is the only way to do it.

Oh yes, did I mention you also have full resistances to everything and an increase of 30% light radius {helpful for Warrior}.

I kicked Na-Krul's backside like this, without weakening him...hehee.  If you love your slicing and dicing, and aren't too much into the magical stuff, get your mitts on these.
2 Jan - Where I found uniques - Drew Austin

I have found the Acolyte's Amulet in the Pods in the Nest.  I have also found the Bonesaw twice by killing monsters around level 6 or so {both normal and hell difficulties.}
2 Jan - Jester Suffix - Aetima

When I first started my Warrior on Hellfire the first special item I got was a Sword of Jester.  It had no magical effects but would randomly hit 500% of whatever you were hitting.  Weird.
2 Jan - Playing the Bard - Koh Soo Jin

For the Bard character, I observe that she uses a sword much better than bows.   Although she could also shoot arrows very fast like a rogue, the damage inflicted is quite small.  e.g. for my lvl 22 Bard, w/o weapons, 17 -17 damage, with Bow of the Heavens {+15 to all}, 10-18 damage, but with a Sword of Speed on the hand and Crystalline Sword {+250% damage, low durability}, 36-96 damage.  Therefore, it's wiser to use Swords for the Bards.

By the way, I can confirm that Theodore was found in Nest 3 instead of Nest 1, from the Hork Demon.
2 Jan - Where I found uniques - Mark Bres

I found the Thunderclap Hammer in the Caves.  I think it was on Level 10.
2 Jan - Oils - Warhawk

After killing just about everything I could find in my first run through Hellfire, I started a new game with my 29th level warrior. I am using the sword "Shadowhawk" and improved it with the oils available in the game. The improvements made by Oils of Sharpness and Skill do not carry over to new games, but the Blacksmith does. Don't know about the others. An item's durability might be limited to an increase to 100/100 - at least Shadowhawk is. More oils will not increase the durability above this point.

On the subject of Na-Krul, I read the books from right to left and all it took to kill him was a few bonks on the bean with good ol' Shadowhawk. PS - what is that silly gibberish he says when he is set free? He rambles on about something or other in a surprisingly human voice....I didn't let him live long enough to hear it all. During my wanderings in the Crypt levels I found the first 2 pieces of the Torn Note, but not the 3rd. Are all 3 available in the same game or is use of the Cornerstone required to assemble all 3?

2 Jan - Eater of Souls - Puck 71

On the Lachdanan quest, not only did I receive the Veil of Steel, but I also picked up a unique two-handed sword called the Eater of Souls.  See the details here.
2 Jan - Na-Krul in Nightmare - Michael Annucci

I have to say that I was filled with serious trepidation by the articles that were submitted on the difficulty of killing Na-Krul in Nightmare mode. I was seriously worried when the many Arch Liches that I ran into ate through my health like Elvis on pizza, despite my 71% resist all.

When the final confrontation came however, I was disappointed. I didn't even use one single health potion, or spell. My Lord's Staff of Haste pounded him so quickly that he didn't even get to swing. He was dead before he was even finished with his lousy diatribe about Diablo....or whatever....hmmmm...time to treat Ol' Betsy to another oil of sharpness...

-chance

PS: Helpful hint number 1,567,982: Since as a monk, I've never had to purchase any equipment other than potions, I have accumulated quite the fortune by selling everything that I have ever found in the dungeons. I thought (wrongly) that it would be a great idea to purchase every single elixir that Pipen ever offered. This was fine and dandy until at 30th level I found out that the monks maximums are: str-150, magic-80, dex-150, vit-80. This blows!!!! Now at 32nd level I have nowhere to put my bonuses. All my levels gained from here on out are virtually wasted! Lesson: take it easy on the firewater, the monks abilities are seriously limited!

2 Jan - Where I found uniques - Adrian

I am a Sorcerer and I found a unique Bow called Blitzen down in Normal Hell Level 14, just by killing one of the bad guys.
2 Jan - Where I found uniques - Carlos

I have played with all the different characters in Hellfire including the Bard and have completed the game start to finish as every character except the Rogue.  I averaged 2 Uniques in the Dungeon levels {1-4}, 1 in the Catacombs, 1 in the Caves, and 2 in the Hell levels.

In the Hive level I found only 1 unique and that was whilst playing the Bard, in the tomb I found only 1 unique as well, but as the Monk.  So for me it seems I get much more unique items from the original levels than from the add-on.  The item I found in the Hive was a Gladiator's Ring, and in the tomb I found the Thunderclap.  In the original levels I found the usual assortment of the more common unique items: Gnarled Root, Naj's Light Plate, Blackoak Shield and Bow, Baranar's Star, a Falcon's Talon and oh yeah Blitzen in a Hell level.
2 Jan - Oil of Fortitude - Puck71

This is a great oil!  It increased my crown from 40/40 durability to 88/88, a 110% increase!
2 Jan - Hellfire bows for caps? - Claire

I was playing my Warrior when I killed the Butcher so I go the Butcher's cleaver much later when I was a level 20.  I quit the game and started a new game with the same person only instead of the undead crown I had a bow on my head and the bow was called the Butcher's cleaver, why did this happen?
1 Jan - Uniques? - Captain G

Where and what the people who get the new unique items are fighting.  I've gotten the thunderclap, bovine plate, demon armor but still haven't come across any of the unique rings or amulets.  I am a level 41 Monk, haven't touched Hellfire God and am getting tired of not getting the uniques.  The Steel Lord in the first level of Hell is an excellent place to start.  I get at least one unique weapon every 3 times I beat him, but nothing I haven't seen.  I have the Bovine Plate, and unidentified Gotterdamerung, Kings staff of Haste 6-12 version, Obsidian Amulet of the Zodiac, two Obsidian Rings.  I've worked my butt off for what I've got.  I just want to see and or use the new staves.  Any help would be appreciated.
1 Jan - Sparkling Shrine/Converting Characters - Peter

About the Sparkling Shrine: My level 32 Warrior gained +2000 exp. points.  It seems to be random.  And the shrine emits the Spell of Flash to be exact.
30 Dec - Oil of Skill - Ben

I have that it takes a net total of 10 points off required skill for a weapon.   Example:  If 60 str is required it would go to 50 str.  If 60 dex and 40 str is required it would be 55 dex and 35 str.
30 Dec - Monk Help - DUS10316

If you are just starting it is good to not use the short staff.  Why you ask?   Because when you start out staff damage is about 2-4 your kick with the monk is like 4-6 and if you increase your dexterity your kicks will get stronger.

Also if you get a lot of gold and not much room in your inventory drop the gold in town it will free up some space for potions and scrolls.
30 Dec - of Decay suffix/Solar Shrine - DertzZaub

I had a sword of Decay and it was about 200 coins and the damage was +200% and I thought WoW.  Every time you hit someone with it the damage % goes down like it was 200 then I hit a fallen one and it went down to 175 so it actually wasn't such a great deal after all so I suggest buying it to kill a unique monster but will prove no good against a boss or everyday use.

I had hit a Solar Shrine.  I can't remember the time but it put up a firewall on me and I was a low level Monk so I almost died.
30 Dec - Bard - Enoch Choi

I don't know if this is a flaw in my game or not but I recently got a Bovine Armor with my Bard, and I wanted to start a new game.  I saved and restarted, but then my armor turned into a Lord's Axe and had the description of the Ring of Truth.
30 Dec - Blacksmith Oil - Curtis Johnson

Blacksmith oil does add 1 to permanent durability.  I've used it to get Thinking Cap dur 1/1 to dur 23/23.   Also used on hidden shrine while the cap was below 10.  Thinking Cap is a good item except for the durability.  Now we have that fixed.  On multiplayer I have been unable to reach the new levels.  Converting Diablo Multi characters to Hellfire Multi characters only a portion of equipment carries over correctly.  My lvl 33 Rogue came out wearing staffs in all the jewelry spots.  The staffs were useless, no charges, they all sold for a dollar and my Mithiral Bow of Heavens turned into a crown.
30 Dec - Magic - Jonathan Basiago

Whilst I was playing Hellfire, I found a staff of Berserk.  When I cast it on one of my enemies the one I targeted was lit up slightly like I was.  The spell caused the creature to attack the one next to it and I'm not totally sure but I think the spell passed from one creature to the next.
29 Dec - Glowing shrine - Chair

Recently on my way down to kick the Butcher's butt with my lvl 16 Monk, I found a glowing shrine.  Since I noticed that there were some inconsistencies on your news updates about the shrine, I wrote some stuff down.  This is what happened to my character.

All spell levels, Strength, Dexterity and Vitality stayed the same.  So did AC, to hit, damage, resistances and Life.  Magic went up from 38 to 43...increase of 5.  Therefore, Mana went up too.  My exp went from 347488 to 330113.  This is a 5% decrease.  That's what happened to my character, I don't know if being something other than a Monk makes a difference, but I suppose it could.  I hope this helps clear up some confusion.
28 Dec - Lightning wall - Craig McKim

I learned when I first got Hellfire that if you die and had a lightning wall up that the creatures that are trying to eat your dead body still receive the lightning wall damage so it may be a good idea to just stay there till it runs down because it will still kill the creatures.
28 Dec - Glowing shrine - Puck71

I read your page, and thought I'd clear up some confusion. When I came across the Glowing Shrine, I was a Level 1 Monk just starting out on Level 1. My experience was up to a hefty 931, and that was all erased with the shrine, putting my Exp. at 0. Since I was just starting, I didn't have any spells to see if it affected their levels or anything like that. All I had was a measly Short Staff that I started with. Also, there were absolutely no attribute changes.
28 Dec - Glowing shrine - Ronald E Loutzenhiser

I ran across it as a first level Warrior - lost all experience points, no change in the stats.
27 Dec - Flambeau - Masayuki Negishi

From what I have found out (by finding and using one) Flambeau has no conventional weapon damage, so it is totally ineffective against Fire-immune monsters. However, it is indestructive and it's weapon damage may be increased by using Oil of Sharpness.
26 Dec - Using the Monk - Ben

When fighting with the Monk it is at times better to not use a weapon all.  I have noticed his damage goes up if he is not equipped with a weapon.  I have noticed his damage goes up if he is not equipped with a weapon.  The only problem is he misses a lot, but once you get your dex. up it is okay.  It especially goes down if you use a shield.  I would also carry a staff to use just incase you go up against a lot of guys.  If you don't carry a weapon use the new spell immolator, the combination kicks {literally}!
24 Dec - Best Armour - Ross

Any armour that makes a chink sound when you put it on is not going to work either.  What that does as far as I can tell is that not only does it not add its AC to your total but it subtracts from you AC.

However I have found a way to overcome this.  At the moment my Monk is wearing full plate armour with an AC of 69.  This is only possible because it is "Awesome" armour and is +135% AC.

What the computer does is that it adds on the +13% AC value to your total, and that is all.  So with my Awesome armour it doesn't add on the 69 AC of the Armour but does add on the +135% (93 AC) to my characters AC.  The Saintly, Awesome, etc prefixes are therefore the types of armour to look out for.
24 Dec - The Bard - Michael Telford

A quick note about the Bard.  She has the same weapon profile as the Rogue, meaning she uses Bows very fast, while hand weapons rather slowly.  However, as she can use two weapons it shouldn't be too hard to find a weapon of Haste.  Also all of the stat bonus's of both weapons are used.   So a Sword of Blood and a Sword of Haste are fully cumulative.
23 Dec - Monk and his armour - GJB

The Monk doesn't like wearing the 'good armour'.  If you play with the armour types and keep an eye on the stats he is better off wearing a magical leather armour than a full plate.
23 Dec - Elixir of Magic - Leon Chia

I notice that the Elixir of Magic now also replenishes your mana.   I don't recall this happening in Diablo.  I just tried Hell difficulty today and found that the Obsidian Lords {caves} were completely immune to Lightning, Fire and Magic!  Had to resort to Apocalypse.
22 Dec - Jester Staves - An Alchemist

The Jester staff performs like a wand of wonder from the Dungeons & Dragons games where every time you use it it does something random.

How do I know this?  Since the Monk uses staves very well and it had spell capabilities with it.  I used it often.  The only problems were that it had only 12 charges and I didn't have a clue what effect might come next.

For example - I was fighting some spitter dogs - the only magic I had left was the stupid staff.  The first charge used stone curse on a dog.  The next threw up a town portal, next I got healed, then a fireball went off, and finally Apocalypse took off killing all of them.  Of all these spells my low level Monk had town portal.  So the staff is not based on what you know or don't know or whether there are set unknown spells with it.  It just casts spells known in the game at random per charge used.
22 - Blood Star - Michael Llewellyn

It''s very important to have the Blood Star spell in the last four levels.  I play a sorcerer on Nightmare difficulty and it was the only thing that affected the Bone Devil {those winged skeletons}.  I used Fireballs against the Liches, Flesh Demons, Tomb Rats etc and Chain Lightning against the Firebats.  I've noticed that the Flash spells works really well with these Bone Spirits also.
21 Dec - Apoc. spell book - Allan MacDonell

I have found that after memorising the spell book Apoc. and trying to use it does not even produce a flicker on the screen let alone kill anything.  All it does is drain me of my mana and leave the monsters I was trying to kill still after me.
