10 June - Making the Witch cough-up- Izual, Warrior

Just before you go to the witch save the game and see what she's got if she don't go any thing you want load the game and she will have some different.

10 June - Various Tips - Koresh (Warrior) 34

Stop Teleporting Counselors

Counselors' teleport puts them away from attacking person - to left, right or backward direction. So, just attack them and lead them to corner of room. Keep attacking Counselor, but keep corner behind him. He vanishes but comes back right under your sword. Good way to finish Lazarus without Stone Curse.

Stay tuned, Diablo

Diablo has realy apocalyptic enthusiasm and follows You at all costs. Lead him to up-right corner of the level, to the center of spiral corridor, then just phase off or teleport out. Diablo choses the shortest way and it's blocked by wall. Go back to town or finish other monsters in level without a worry.

Recovering equipment

If you are playing alone or all team gets' a little problame of death, it's highly recommended to have telekinesis spell. Get back in to the level and use telekinesis spell from afar. It works through the walls too.

Too nasty level

If Your team enters new level and You've got trouble at the beginning, it's good tactic to run a bit deeper in level in different directions. Use Town Portal and get back to town. Then Your team can rearrange forces and enter one of the portals. When monsters recognize you get back to the town and enter another portal. Keep surprising monsters to the death. Same surprise assoult can be performed alone at the first Cathedral's, Catacombs', Caves' or Hell's level using stairs from town as another portal.

Stop killing each other

It's recommended for new players to remember about specific spells. There are no monster shooting fireballs at first four levels, no monster using Flamewave at any level, etc. If team runs in different directions or is disconnected and someone shoots at you some powerfull spell or spells from afar, don't respond with the best of your spells, but hide behind wall and send message to other players stop it. If you are in battle use hotkeys (F9-F12) to ask stop these attacks. F9-F12 can me midified in Diablo.INI located in Diablo directory.
7 June - "of thieves", the misunderstood suffix - Varaya

Since nobody has written it yet in the forum or somewhere else, here's something not many people know:

Try wearing a ring/amulet with the suffix "of thieves". Now why would you wear such a crappy item ? Well, because it is not crappy at all :-) "Of thieves" is supposed to only half the trap damage, but in fact it halves also all ranged and magical attacks. Yes, that _does_ mean that it halves all the damage you would receive from an arrow AND all ranged damage from the mages/witches/spitters in the hell levels.

So this opens up new equipment thoughts:

- wear a ring/amulet with "of thieves" in addition to an obsidian ring.   This will mean half damage from magical attacks because of "of thieves" and then the remaining half will be reduced because of your resistance. Maybe you could even wear an item which reduces damage, because that reduction is done _after_ "of thieves" and resistance are calculated. On levels with only witches, you could even try wearing a scavenger's carapace, which will reduce the remaining damage all the way down to a min of 1 point.

- ever been angry because Gotterdamerung reduces your resistances to zero ? Well, now you can have 50% resistance (of thieves) AND wear Gotterdamerung with all its great features (like +20 all) at the same time :-) (and you can then throw away your obs jewelry and put in zodiacs or whatever you always wanted to use)

[Thanks to Crystalion(Snakegod) for finding this nice feature]

5 May - Building up a character - Jeff, Warrior

A good way to build new characters is to start a new game and load a more experienced character into the game with you. You can then kill the other character off and collect his gold and more advanced weapons. Then save your character and load it into a new game. You can do this several times until you have duplicated as much gold and weapons as you feel necessary. Remember, if say for example, your warrior has a powerful weapon that would be useless to a sorcerer you can still sell it over and over again.
28 April - Celia's reward- Marco Zinn

I found Theo and brought him back to Celia, but before doing this, I saved the game. I got a Crystal Amulet (+41% Magic Resist.), which I found of no use at that time (My Monk was at level 16). So I loaded the game, went to Cain, then went to Celia. This time, I got an amulet of the Stars (+9 to all), which I kept. It seems to be somewhat random, which amulet you get from her. Another thing to this quest: I killed the Hork Demon, but couldn't find the toy. I searched the whole place over and over and was getting quite angry, because I thought, a bug made the toy disappear (Oh, my amulet!). But, then I found it in my inventory! It was quite a bit of action killing the Hork Demon and all the other monsters, and I must have collected the bear while fighting. Problem was: The damned Bear looked a bit like a pile of gold, when you only take a quike look in your inventory. So: If you can't find the teddy bear, have a GOOD look in your Inv!
8 April - fastest way to get stuff from wirt - Tan Chee Wai

I found out that you can actually get wirt to offer new stuff without buying any unwanted stuff here's what you should do.

Walk up to wirt but not interacting with him, save the game then talk to wirt and buy whatever he offered  I you want the stuff he offer, then save the game, if not don't save the game after you bought the stuff, then reload the stuff that you've bought earlier will not be there in your backpack of course since you save the  game before you buy the stuff but wirt will offer you a new stuff to buy! In just 20 minutes, I managed to get 2 rings of zodiac from wirt!

8 April - Gharbad the Weak - Juffo Wupp

People have noted that Celia drops different amulets when you reload your game and perform different actions. The same is true of Gharbad the Weak. Save before you talk to him and load your game if you get something you don't want. Then, do something before going to him, like cast a spell or kill an enemy. He should drop a different item. I've gotten the "Wicked Axe", "Fools Crest", and "Wizardspike" as well as all sorts of other unique and valuable items.

27 March - Apocalypse - Charles Cruden

Apocalypse appears to be a 'one level fits all' spell. I've put it up 5 levels with a level 37 mage, and the only time any of its stats changed was when the character went up a level. At level 5, it still costs 90 mana to cast, and currently does 37 to 222 points of damage (damage rises as the characters level does). Fortunately, nova and immolation don't succumb to the same problems. :)
27 March - Dealing with Na-Krul - Charles Cruden

Immunities/resistances change depending on whether you open the door with the lever or with the books. If you open it with the lever, Na-Krul is resistant to all on all levels of difficulty. Nothing magical does him any harm, except reflect which still does damage if he hits you. Na-krul is immune to stone curse.

If you open the door with the books, I'm not sure what his immunities are, but he is NOT immune to fire on normal or nightmare difficulty.
23 Feb - Negative modifiers bug - Dalmor

I've seen lots of posts about "super" unique items, and some of you may have put it all together and figured this out, but I'll post this for you new players out there (as well as for Synergistic, if they want to do another patch).

There is a bug in the game which wraps around negative modifiers on all items (in all patch versions, AFAIK). All items which formerly gave minus percent to hit or to AC will now give a huge positive bonus; for example, a gnarled root gives -6 AC. Due to the bug, if the item is left in town and the owner goes down and then back up OR the item is dropped and someone else picks it up (in multiplayer) the AC will now be 256-6, or +250 AC. Items with minus to hit (for example ,a Dull sword, -5% to hit) will now give 65536-5, or +65531% to hit.

Unique items with this bug include the Celestial Star, Gnarled Root, Scavenger's Carapace, Holy Defender, etc. As well as all (formerly) cursed items. So now all your old BNM equipment is suddenly in demand. (heh)

I haven't confirmed if this bug extends to items with -x to all attributes (Doombringer, plate of trouble, etc) or to items with -x damage. If so, I'd expect Doombringer to now give +251 to all attributes, which might cause corrupted characters, like the Diablo plate on battle.net.
23 Feb - Glowing, Oil and Eerie Shrines - Charles Cruden

The Glowing shrine doesn't just work on -5% experience. There appears to be a minimum number of XP deducted. I tried using one with a 2nd level character who went from 4600 XP to 0 XP after using it.

The Oily shrine, that it casts a small ring of fire around the shrine directly on the person who uses it. Hence the
'that which does not kill you' message.

Finally, with the original Diablo shrines, the Eerie shrine also permanently sucks mana.
23 Feb - Disposing of King Leoric - Vamina, Rogue

To defeat him, I like to use the Golems. Send out abut three or four of them. They'll help take care of the skeletons. Then, it's always good to cast the holy bolt spell at King Leoric. When your Golems are gone, there will be a couple of skeletons left. But there really easy to kill.
22 Feb - Punishment for using Flux's Shopping Advice - Shannon & Paul Burkhard

I have been using Flux's advice for shopping for items in Hellfire. I am currently carrying a King's Great Axe of Blood, King's War Staff of Haste, King's Maul of Haste, Godly Plate, Godly Shield, King's Bastard Sword of Haste and King's Bastard Sword of Heavens as a Bard. Both Gris and Wirt are constantly giving me great items. Dragon's Zodiac Rings are common, King's items are prolific. Wirt even sold me a Merciless Bow of the Heavens: 1-14 +161 percent damage, +15 all.

So, that works great. The only problem is the dungeon now yields next to nothing. I have been finding magic rags, magic quilted armor, rings of power, stuff like that in hell/hell. I suppose that the game looks at your items in inventory and uses an inverse relationship when stocking the dungeon: if you have great items in inventory. there will be great stuff for sale, but next to nothing to find in the dungeon. Oh, well, maybe I'll drop all of my stuff, save my game and start the hunt all over again!

Read Flux's Tip
17 Feb - Finding and taking care of boss monsters (including Lazarus) - Black-Razor, Rogue

Boss monsters are surrounded by light, and this can be seen even if the boss isn't in line of sight. Low level characters can definately live longer by paying attention to these lights because they show where the bosses are without opening a door. Also, if using missile weapons, players can hit the bosses that go invisible at a distance... just shoot in the area of the light. Lazarus is easy to find because he and two other bosses are in the same area, this gives plenty of warning before entering his area.

P.S. If you expect a big battle with bosses or lazarus or even diablo, then make a town portal, in case retreat is necessary.
8 Feb - How the game decides what uniques you find - RJKIX

First, the game decides if you deserve a unique item. Second, it picks a level that it will be on. Next it chooses one of the magic items to be the unique item. The higher the level, the bigger the list of uniques the game picks from. It then decides which one's your character level deserves, and the best item in that list is what you get. If you fight a unique character, the chances of getting a unique item increase, as does the list of items it will give.
8 Feb - Bovine Plate - Wes AKA Cynic

If you want to use the Bovine Plate but don't want to suffer the light radius or mana and spell -2 levels penalties, then just don't identify it. You lose the resistances, but you're left with an A/C150 unique plate that can be worn by anyone with a ST of 50+. In this state, a monk may wear it without penalty of any kind.
8 Feb - Combat Tip for the Nest - Wes AKA Cynic

I was resigned to either playing hide and seek with the Psycho/Necromorbs, Spider Lords, and those fire spitting worms or else taking damage while chasing them around the nest, when I found a better method.

Golems seem to be their nemesis (they appear to have trouble tracking him as he walks up and then whacks them dead with one blow :). A little experimentation showed golems capable of wasting anything they come across on all four levels (on Norm difficulty, at least). I only had a golem crushed twice; once by the Defiler, and once by a pack of about a dozen boars. Otherwise, the hardest part was keeping up with him while picking up the loot. This method works especially smoothly if you have a decent bow or magery to give him a little fire support. And yes, you do get XP from the golem's kills, although I'm not sure whether it's reduced or not.
7 Feb - Getting elixirs - <<-RAK->>

Here's a little trick: If you need elixirs, and you have enough money, just go to the witch or the healer, buy and drink (not absolutely needed) all of them. Then save your game, and load it again, after saving it, of course. This will give the healer or witch new elixirs to sell, and you can repeat this little trick unlit you have used all your money or don't need any new elixirs. This trick also works in normal Diablo. This little save-and-load trick also works with books and most of the other stuff they sell.

5 Feb - Bard/Barbarian & the Gnarled Root - Syndell, Lvl 32 Bard

- The Barbarian gets one point of base damage per 4 points of strength AND vitality,  so keep boosting that vitality.

- The Bard's bow fire rate is considerably slower than the rouge's.

- The Bard's damage is not correctly stated in the Damage box, can't prove it, but I know that my character isn't doing the whole 170 points of damage that the stats say

- The Bard can use the unique sword Shiotachi one handed.

- The Bard will do multiple attacks if there are monsters to her right and in front of her, she doesn't seem to attack monsters to her left -The Barbarians multiple attack is three monsters anywhere in front of him, while the bard only attacks two if they are in the right positions.

- Using mana shield, a hasted sword, and a nice sword(kings or champions) of vampires is an excellent combination for the bard - I use it even in hell\hell.

- I noticed a small glitch in the game, if you find the gnarled root, KEEP IT! When you start a new game, drop it onto the ground, go down to the dungeon and then come back up, instead of having a negative 10 AC, it has changed to 246!! If you have a Bard pair it up with a King's sword and look at the damage go! Then take a gander at your AC, mine is somewhere around 435 or so.
4 Feb - Wirt shopping tips - Dalmor, lvl 31 warrior (lvl 37 in Diablo and battle.net)

I followed Flux's observations about magic items offered by Gris in his Jan 15 post. I bought one each of every type of item (sword, shield, armor, helm, etc) and soon had my barbarian nicely kitted out: Awesome/Giants full plate, King's Axe of Heavens, Obs Helm of Harmony... Having a lot more money left over on my storage characters, I decided to check Wirt out. In doing so, I found the following (all in multiplayer):

1. If you have lots of money, you can get new offerings from Wirt faster if you buy his current item, and exit/reenter the town (I go down into the Caves) instead of starting a whole new game. You also don't have to walk all the way across Tristram, just up and down a flight of stairs. This works wonderfully if you have friends dumping gold beside Wirt for
you to use (i.e. have two friends working Hell/church for cash, while you shop.)

2. Wirt's items follows Griswold's criteria: he often offers you item categories that you aren't carrying, and he gives you better items than you currently have. The items he offers are generated at the point   you enter town, so make sure you are carrying good items as you climb back up those stairs. If you want to make sure Wirt offers you swords, then leave your sword in town as you climb down/up from the Caves.

3. The amount of money on you does not seem to have an effect on the quality of items he is offering, just the items you have in your inventory. He often gives me good armor even if I have less than 5K gold.

Working this way, the results were spectacular - in the space of two hours, Wirt gave my lvl 34 barbarian:

- 2 suits of Godly Full Plate (AC 71, 69) and a Godly full plate of Ages (AC 73)

- 2 Holy shields, AC 18, 17

- a Godly shield of Ages, AC 20 (nice) and Godly shield, AC 19

- A King's Sword of Slaughter, bastard sword version, +17 damage.

He also offered me several two-handed king's swords, as well as king's flails, maces and mauls, and the usual assortment of
Sapphire/Ruby/Diamond/Emerald items. No Godly Rags, though - the worst armor he gave me was a Holy Breastplate of the Mammoth. Go figure.

Since this was multiplayer, he didn't offer me rings or amulets. Your luck may vary - but I've finally found one of my goals - legit (sort of)  Godly Plate. Now for that Emerald ring of the Zodiac... :)
4 Feb - Apocalypse Spell - Sky'ree+

Just an observation I made about the apocolypse spell. In the original Diablo, the spell would effect enemies even if they were not in your line of sight (ie: other side of wall). In Hellfire, apoc will only effect enemies that you see on the screen.

Now we can't kill all of Diablo's room without saying hello - oh well.

2 Feb - Rage skill trick - T Simmonds

I've found out something very interesting about the rage skill yes it has a bug but it can be turned to your advantage if you use rage and walk back up to town and back down before it wears off it becomes permanent also if you take off all weapons you are using it does not effect your health at all.
1 Feb - Hellfire patch - Timothy J Judd Jr

I tried out the patch and noticed that they took out some of the "features" that were available in both Diablo and Hellfire.

I specifically mean the duping ability -- it was nice to be able to not have to worry about money.

The Barbarian SUCKS !!! It is probably the only "hidden" character in a game that is a major wuss! He died on me 4 time on level 1 in normal mode! The first time it was because I pumped him on too much "rage skill", but without it he was beat down by skeletons and the (simple) like. Hellfire is good without the patch if you do not experience any lockups or crashes, they should have updated Hellfire as follows (to make it truly worthwhile):

- v1.0a Add Barbarian Class
- v1.0b Fix general crash problems
- v1.0c Menu driven update to fix any and all SELECTED problems (Even Win95 lets you select accessories!)

I know, this is a poor excuse for a gripe, but I think they should have fixed the things that were truly wrong with the program before taking out MINOR glitches that were beneficial to newbies.
1 February - Bard Battle Combos - Oliver Chua

The Bard's ability to use 2 weapons simultaneously allows some very exciting combos with the use of a doppelganger sword, sword of blood, and/or sword of haste. While it is always nice to attack the fastest, the most fun combination involves the doppelganger and blood swords. As extra monsters pop up from attacking with the doppelganger sword, the sword of blood will give you life for each hit you make. This way, you can be assured of a more steady supply to steal life from!!

Don't forget that the Bard can hit 3 monsters at one swing - however, you must be using swords in both hands to enable this! I have tried using a sword with a mace/hammer, and also using mace/hammer in both hands, but this doesn't seem to work.

A Bard could also fire a bow as fast as a Rogue - however, this ability is only available in Hellfire Version 1.00. If you apply the Version 1.01 patch, the firing speed is really slowed down! Oh well, I guess this is a game balance thing.

Which still leaves us with Magic - the Bard has a maximum Magic stat of 120. This is second only to the Sorcerer! Hell, if you can't shoot 'em just blow them away!!
30 Jan - Oil of Hardening - Adrian

I downloaded the beta_3 patch today in hope to see that when I use an oil of hardening the bonus won`t be lost when I start a new game.  But the bonus is still lost.. ( only the oil of fortitude bonus remains ! )
30 Jan - Berserk Spell - Sir Lancelot

This might me of interest to those that have begun using the Berserk spell to help clear levels. I had not noticed this before and I don't think I have read it, but when you Berserk the monsters, you get 0(nada) experience for any other monsters they kill. I was clearing levels using the Berserk spell and noticed it took for ever to reach the next level! Now I know why!!
29 Jan - Uniques generation - The Lead Programmer of Hellfire (Donald Tsang)

Okay, so the random item generator has determined that you may deserve a random unique of a certain type (say, rings). Now it goes through the list of uniques, and sees if there are any that you're allowed to have on that dungeon level (plus a few if you're getting this from a unique critter) that you haven't already found this session. It then takes the last one of those it finds (which is, presumably, the highest-level-and-therefore-best), and gives it to you.
29 Jan - Wirt trick - Jonathan Basiago

I found a trick for Wirt that works like the one with Adria. Here's how it goes:

1. Buy something from Wirt (doesn't matter what it is) then save your game.

2. Now just keep reloading your game until you have found some thing you like. You can sell the first item you got to Griswald if you don't like it.

If you find something you like, buy it, then save your game again and keep looking for more. I have found a Weird axe of the Ages, Weird sword of the Ages (both 99% to hit) and a Kings Saber of Haste:)
23 Jan - Bovine Plate theory - ladydeath

Regarding the Bovine Plate irregularities, here's my theory. I don't know how could the coding result in this, but if you lay your hands on a new suit after the patch, you get the -50 mana, and the suit that your character still wears while the patch is applied will get +0 to mana. Pedro did mention something about -2 to spell levels when the official patch is out, that would really suck for everyone 'cept maybe the Barbarian. I like the armor. In fact, the original one was great if they hadn't made it so radiant(+50% light). Maybe we can egg Sierra to change it again. Stick to the original features, and no light increase. I could put up with a -10% to light too.:)

22 Jan - Bovine investigation results - Chris Weber

I´ve checked that thing with the bovine plate out .... here are the results:

Before installing the patch there was no mana in/decrease , but -5 damage from enemies . After installing the patch it has +0 mana in single ( bard screenshot ) and -50 mana in multi ( barbarian screenshot ). So the patch obviously fixed the stats of the bovine plate ; a good idea in my opinion ; the plate really was too good ; after finishing the hive in normal modus the characters easiely could play nm / hell .. ;-)) well , my barbarian now has -50 mana ... instead of +11 ... who cares.  Compare both screen shots here.
22 Jan - Barbarian Observation - Chris Weber

Some observations on the barbarian :

There are 3 weapon-classes he really likes: axes, maces and mauls, with these weapons his attack is faster, he does a lot more damage than with others and he is able to attack up to 3 monsters with one hit. The barbarian can use all 2 handed weapons with one hand (except axes); but putting a shield on has some negative effects: the damage he does is reduced; he doesn´t get the full AC of the shield ; the multi-attack is lost.

Here are some comparisons I did with my barbarian : I used a gold maul of speed (damage 6-20); with this the attack was faster than with a great sword of HASTE ( !!! ) and my barbarian did a little more damage than with a vicious 2handed-sword ( damage 8-16 + 86%).
18 Jan - Equipping the Barbarian - 4Norm

I tried to equip the Leather of Aut, but found that it negated all my equipped items. This also happened when I
tried to use an item that had minus to magic. I guess if you put the magic stat below 0 you can't wear anything and have it work. I also noticed that if you equip a shield with the Barbarian, your damaged done is cut in half.......
18 Jan -  Gris/Auric amulet - Sky'ree+

Just thought I'd confirm for everyone that yes, Gris is aware of the auric amulet.   Any plate costing more than 170k would be impossible to buy without the auric amulet {you need 6 empty squares to place the plate}.  To see the plates costing 185k, click here.
18 Jan - Seeding times - Barry Jacobsen

A great seeding time for books in the church is between 4:25 p.m. and 4:35p.m. I got 6 books from level one of the church!!!!!!!!!! And 4 from level 2!!!!! in that same game I also got a Thinking Cap from one of the chests in by the Skeleton King, all single player with a monk.
18 Jan - Berserk is Cool! - Jeff Isaac

I agree with Puck71 about the usefulness of the berserk spell. I have read about and heard a lot of people call it a "novelty" spell. I disagree. It is just as good as a golem. In some ways it is better because some of the stronger monsters last longer than a golem in nightmare and hell diffs. I like to send my golem one way, a berserker another, and I head another direction. Usually between the three of you, you can clear a level without too much hassle. You just wander through and pick up the booty. Satyr Lords in the crypts work surprisingly well. They are slow but they just keep going. I have also noticed that golems are good against the lichs and arch lichs. They don't seem to shoot at it for some reason so it can survive a roomful of them without much of a scratch.
17 Jan - Wirt/Gris items - Sky'ree+

In response to Flux's method of getting awesome equipment, I tried it out and it works big time. I did however get offered items of greater value than 140k, here is a pic of a plate @ 155k - Pic 1. Flux [among many others] also inquired about whether Wirt offers Godly full plates. I was offered a nice plate - Pic 2. Hellfire's Wirt is not as greedy as he used to be, a godly full plate was just a bit over 100k, not much more expensive as an awesome full plate.

16 Jan - Query on spells? - Jason Rekker

Regarding the monk and his spells not decreasing in mana usage after certain levels...Is this not the same for other characters? I seem to remember some of the minor spells like firebolt reaching a mana consumption level of three when the spell was only level 6 or 7. This was on a mage in Diablo. I just assumed that's what happened with all spells...that they increased in power with each level, but mana consumption stops going down at a certain level. Has anyone experienced a spell decreasing in mana consumption for every level it goes up? Even to level 15 or 20?
16 Jan - An interesting story - Puck71

Also, I thought I'd tell a interesting/funny story. In a nightmare game, I got down to level 4 of the Nest/Hive. Soon I came upon two Spider Lords, and quickly cast Berserk and moved away fast. From behind my wall, I heard my berserk spider go on a rampage. When I walked through there shortly after, I came to no resistance! There were dead bodies everywhere!! What really bowled me over though is that in my wanderings I came upon the Cathedral Map just sitting there!! My Spider Lord had killed the Defiler!! All in all, it killed about 40 monsters. Here's a piece of advice: cast Berserk on Spider Lords, it works incredibly well!!
15 Jan - Oil Of Sharpness - Rob/Equivicas Rogue(29)

Hey there just discover that you cannot use an infinite number of oils. I am not counting but after maybe 20 oil's of sharpness there is no additional effect.  EECK!!
15 Jan - Mana shield's level - Charlie Beel

Mana Shield costs 33 mana at lowest...ever. My level 46 mage...lvl 44 mage...lvl 40 rogue use it and I am very
familiar. What it lacks in bringing down mana per spell level...it gives more protection. Every Mana Shield level offer 3% more protection.
