Matchup, Characters & Items
Erik the Red from Donegal, Ireland has
added himself to the Matchup page. He
has also sent along three uniques, Holy Defender, The Grandfather and the Royal Circlet
which I've added to the appropriate packs and updated the list pages in the Shoppe.
Jørgen's Saraldin is now included in the Characters section of the files page. A Sorcerer nicely equipped
and experienced up to the eyeballs.
Art, ASB, and the Buttheads have sent along a pack of multiplayer items. I'd received a
lot of requests for stable mp items so I know this pack will be appreciated. You can
find these in the Items section of
the files page.

Uniques/Location
Carried out a quick tally of the info in the Uniques/Location page and here they are in
order of number of times found:
Rings - 39
Swords - 31
Armour -31
Bows - 31
Amulets - 23
Staves -23
Axes -22
Maces/Clubs - 19
Helms - 15
Shields - 10
Most popular in each category are:
Rings - Gladiator's
Swords - Shiotachi
Armour - Torn Flesh of Souls and the Bone Chain
Bows - Gnatsting
Amulets - Acolyte's
Staves - Naj's Puzzler
Axes - Stonecleaver
Maces/Clubs - Thunderclap Hammer
Helms - Gotterdamerung
Shields - Splitskull
No real surprise that Hell is the most popular set of levels by far for the uniques to be
found with the Hives being the worst.
Mutliplayer Matchup
Squid, an English guy/lad/chap/fella {is there a universal name I wonder, hope to hell
fella isn't it, decidedly dodgy that one} living in Hong Kong has added himself to the matchup page.
Items galore
Ostar has sent in the Giant's Knuckle Ring, Mercurial Ring and Amulet of Warding, Carlos
Martinezso has sent along a Flambeau {bow} and I've updated the packs in the Shoppe with these items now. Biehn has sent a
nice bumper pack along {520kb} containing 1,800 items including the Amour of Gloom
{identified} which I know folk were looking for from a thread on the Forum and also the spectral elixir - which gives +2-3
each time used (can be used over and over again with no bad effects). This pack can be
found in the files section. Thanks to Ostar,
Carlos and Biehn for that lot.
Tuesday 10 February 1998
Stu's Item Editor
Stu has sent along a copy of the demo format of his utility which is now available for download {15kb}. He is
currently working on a full version which will use combo boxes and will support many of
the Diablo items also. This also requires MFC42.DLL MSVCRT.DLL. You may already have
these in your Win95 System directory but if not you can download a zip of these two
{618kb} here.
Shoppe's Open
Yesterday I told you that I'd rezipped the packs in the Shoppe using Winzip so you'd get
the full item names instead of a partial name and a ~ at the end. What I had forgot
to do in my haste was change the link names in the Shoppe. All fixed now so
apologies for that, case of more haste, less speed I guess.
Monday 9 February 1998
Hellfire backup
Kevin Lambert mailed in notification that his popular backup utility now includes support
for Hellfire.....
All the features of DiabloBackup v1.0,
v1.1, and v2.0
NEW: 1) Backup & restore multiplayer Hellfire characters.
NEW: 2) Transfer multiplayer Hellfire characters from one computer to another.
NEW: 3) Transfer Diablo single player characters to Hellfire single player characters.
NEW: 4) Transfer Diablo multiplayer characters to Hellfire multiplayer characters.
EW: 5) Transfer Hellfire single player characters to Diablo single player characters.
NOTE: Currently I have disabled transferring Hellfire multiplayer characters to Diablo
multiplayer characters because it causes Diablo to crash. I will enable this feature if it
ever becomes safe.
Download DiabloBackup Version 3.0 - BETA
{161kb} here. Full FAQ's
included in this zip.
Thanks also to Curtis Johnson for giving
me the headsup on this one.
Updated Item Maker
Chris AKA Dude has already updated his Hellfire random item maker utility
with an auto loader which means that it will fill all 55 spaces in a character 'ItemDude'
with items hellrand has made. This means you will be able to do a full restore over
the character in Hellfire and not have to load the items one by one. Chris is
currently working hard on a Windows version of this util and I'll post it here as soon as
it arrives.
File names
It appears that there have been problems viewing the full filenames of the items in the RX Diablo Shoppe. Finally worked out what the
problem was. I had been using Winzip to unzip stuff but zipping the files in dos as
it's easier. Anyway I've rezipped them in Winzip now so you'll be able to view the
full name of each item making it easier to know what to select.
Matchup
The Frost Lord from Italy and Ironass from just up the road in Aberdeen have been added to
the Mutliplayer Matchup list..Keith
"Spectyr" Verity has included his review
of Hellfire and extends a special thanks to those who worked on helping us all get
mutliplayer up and running.

Request answered
Earlier today I posted a request on behalf of Timothy Judd for betas 1 and 2 of
Sierra's patch. Many thanks to Meley and Michael Llewellyn for coming to Timothy's
aid and sending these in. I've mailed them both off to him.
Player Matchup
Just a quick note to say I've added my own details to the Multiplayer Matchup list as I'd like to start a new Rogue on
Battle.net. Be sure to check by that page to see if there is anyone in your timezone
looking for a game, you can also drop me a line with your details so I can add them.
Story time
Pull up a comfy chair as it's story time folks. Bill Feldman has put pen to paper to
create an original account entitled The Barbarian, From Tristram to Diablo. This story,
released in weekly chapters, chronicles the trials and tribulations of a Barbarian by the
name of Sweet William. Head here
to enjoy Chapter one. Following chapters will be announced here when they are
released.
Hellfire Item Maker
Dude aka Blacksmith has sent along a copy
of his Hellfire random item maker
- DOS version 1.0 {22kb}. I have forwarded a stack of Hellfire item files to him
which he needs in order to make a Windows version which is forthcoming. You will
need Raymond's Hellfire
Trainer {301kb} to load the items files onto your character. You can also find
both of these utilities in the Files
section.
Request
Timothy Judd has mailed me requesting copies of beta 1 and beta 2 of Sierra's patch.
Unfortunately each time I upgraded the previous version was overwritten. If anyone can
come to Timothy's aid on this one please mail
them in and I will pass them on. Thanks - Elly.
Saturday 7 February 1998
Item file
Zultan has sent in version 1.0 of his
item pack. Slash-n-Dash has also sent in an item pack. We are still on the lookout
for Mercurial ring, Giant's Knuckle and Amulet of Warding incase anyone has those.
You can find both those packs in the files
section.
Player matchup
Brandon Fry of Canada and Kelvyn Zhuang of Singapore have both added themselves to the Multiplayer Linkup List. So if you are in
either of those areas and fancy a game....
Diablo Shoppe
I've now included links for each category in the Shoppe
to a separate page where you can find a list of exactly what each pack contains. I
will always update these lists when I add new items. This should help when deciding
whether to download or not.
Friday 6 February 1998
Multiplayer matchup
Fellow Hellfire player Adrian Lee has written suggesting that details of gamers wishing to
link up for some multiplayer fun be posted on the site. Adrian's contact and
availability details have been posted in the Playing
Multiplayer section of the site for now. So if you're up for some
mutliplayer Hellfire send your details
along.
Doppelganger fun
With the appearance of Sierra's patch the
Diablo Doppelganger duping 'bug' was whisked away from us before we even had a chance to
get silly with it. Not so, Phillip Covert AKA Naimah Dolgotha has sent in a picture of him and two Diablos. Looks like he
was caught well off guard too as you'll see. I'll add that this game took place
after Sierra's patch was installed.
Thursday 5 February 1998
Shoppe delivery
I've updated the Shoppe with a new ring
pack and an armour pack. I've taken the appropriate items from Armagedon's bumper
pack posted earlier and also Spike and Zultan have both sent in the Ring of Thunder and
Armour of Gloom. I know many of you emailed requesting these items in particular so you
can visit the Shoppe and pick them up now.
Character addition
TeRR0RNauT has sent along a level 22 Mage
by the name of Anari0n kitted out with Dreamflange, Thinking cap, Naj's Lightplate,
Blessed shield of brilliance +15 mag, Obsidian amulet of wizardry +37 +30, Drake's ring of
wizardry +48 +30 and Dragon's ring of wizardry +60 +25. You can find Anari0n tucked away
in the files section.
Item Pack
Armagedon has sent in a bumper pack of 1353 items. I will split these into the
appropriate packs for the Shoppe but you can also find this in the files section.
Tuesday 3 February 1998
Review
I've added a new reivew from Computer Games Online to the Reviews section. Thanks to Puck71 for sending that along.
New Forum
I've put up a new style forum which
I think will be easier for me to manage and you to use. I've posted the last two
days messages back into it so they are not lost. Oh and joy of joys this one posts
the latest messages at the top:) As always your feedback on changes is appreciated. - Elly
Competition
Here's your chance to win not only a copy of Diablo 2 but also a SonicStorm by
Videologic. I have one of these 3D sound accelerators in my machine and the sound is
excellent, really crisp or as one person commented 'wicked man', yes well suffice to say
it's worth it's weight in gold as far as the old sound goes.
For full details of the competition check out the Unofficial Diablo 2 site. Good luck and let your imagination flow
on this one folks.
Monday 2 February 1998
Items
I've updated the item packs in the Shoppe and also added some for Rings, Books, Oils
and Amulets.
Sunday 1 February 1998
Updates
Biehn has sent along an updated version
of his item pack so it now contains 189 items. Sabbath has sent along his pack of
Toys as well as TeRR0RNauT, Frosty and Tri§tan. Thanks to those guys for those and
you can find them in the files
section.
Updated the 'Shoppe' with details of how to get
these items into your game. Thanks to Biehn {Tobey} and First Angel for sending
those details along.
Saturday 31 January 1998
Just a wee note to say I have quite a few
items packs to go through but I'll need a whole day to go through them all so will be
doing them tomorrow. Sorry no updates today as I'm off out but should have some
fuller packs for you by tomorrow night along with other updates. I will also be
sorting out the sword pack which at the moment is not displaying the full item names. -
Elly
Friday 30 January 1998
Updates
Reduced the size of two of the character files {Conan and Nin} considerably with a handy
tip from Packeteer, so they'll be a lot easier to download now. Added details of the
the Oil of Permanence to the Magic page -
Thanks to Konrad for sending that in.
Diablo 2 news
Don't usually report Diablo 2 stuff on here, leave that for the Diablo 2 site but I thought I'd
point you in the direction of it today with news of the Beta testing.
It has been reported on many of the Diablo 2 sites on the net that Beta testing will take
place in November with it's retail release over the Christmas period. I can confirm
at this time that there is no truth to this rumour and no announcement and/or decision has
even been made about the testing of Diablo 2.
Blizzard are still aiming for a Christmas release but do keep in mind Starcraft was also
pencilled in for Christmas 97 and we are still in the beta testing stages for that.
It is very rare that a game would be tested for one month only, and with the complexity of
Diablo a November test and December release is highly unlikely.
When I receive confirmation of the beta testing details I will post them here so for now,
sit tight.

Year-old question answered
The Lead Programmer of Hellfire (Donald Tsang) has provide the answer to how Uniques are
generated...
"Okay, so the random item generator
has determined that you may deserve a random unique of a certain type (say, rings). Now it
goes through the list of uniques, and sees if there are any that you're allowed to have on
that dungeon level (plus a few if you're getting this from a unique critter) that you
haven't already found this session. It then takes the last one of those it finds (which
is, presumably, the highest-level-and-therefore-best), and gives it to you."
Simple eh:) Thanks to First Angel for
sending this in.
New Page
Yep I've not updated in a day or so. I wasn't slacking though I have been working
on a new page. With all the item files I've been receiving over the past few days I
thought rather than just tuck them away in the files section I'd create a new
section. Called Reality X's Diablo Shoppe
it contains individual packs of items, each in their own categories. Each pack will
not contain every single item in that category but I have few more bumper packs in my mail
box and as well as putting these in the files section I will add these to the specific
packs in the Shoppe.
Tuesday 27 January 1998
New Patch
Yes, there seems to be yet another patch direct from Sierra's webmaster, so I guess we'll
be calling this one beta 3. There are many fixes to random issues including random gossip
and disappearing quests. The readme is exactly the same as for beta 2. The
patch has increased from 226kb to 557kb so it's a fair increase. You can download
it from here.
Updates
I've taken some more posts out of the forum again to help keep it running efficiently. The thread on
modem to modem I've moved to the Playing
Multiplayer page as there is some handy stuff in there for future reference.
Added a tasty staff .itm to the files
section from Packeteer and also a couple of items from Intrama; Intrama's Blade and Ring
of Intrama. A bumper pack from First Angel has also been added, I've listed exactly
what is in the pack for convenience.
Added full listing of Diablo's prefixes
& suffixes to the list of new ones in Hellfire.
Also I've submitted the Diablo
2 site to a top 20 chart so if you have a spare minute visit the site and click the
Diablo 2 Top 20 logo to cast a vote for the site. Thanks, Elly

You know how after an obscene amount of playing Diablo you can get a stabbing pain in the
palm of your hand from the continuous mouse clicks? Or is that just me? Well

Added the Decay suffix to the Weapon's sections.

character files added, a Bard with the best equipment, a Warrior and Conan take three.
You can find these lot tucked away in the files
section. Note that the 'bumper pack on the files section now includes Raymond's trainer

Added pics and details of two new unique rings,
Kariks Ring and Xorine's Ring. Thanks to TeRR0RNauT for sending these in.

Updates

also the icons for Jester and Magic suffixes.

Kali Patch
In addition to Kali V 1.31 you will now also need patch 1.31d which will allow you to play
both the Hive and Demon Crypt levels in Mulitplayer. You will not need Nitrokid's
hellfrui hack files to enter these levels if using this patch. You can also play the
new hidden character classes, the Bard and the Barbarian. The problems with joining
Hellfire games in progress seem to have been fixed as well! Thanks to Nitrokid for
sending that along. The Playing
Multiplayer page has been updated with this info also for future reference.
Friday 23 January 1998
Updated Hack
Stu, creator of the Hellfire Hack has sent along build 2 of this utility. Changes in
this version are....
1. Added .HFD Shell extension so HFD
files open with hfhack.
2. Changed the method to get Hellfire's hWnd
3. Added a home page button for easier access to my page.
Go here to download.
Forum purge
In order to speed up the forum I have deleted 200+ posts. You should at least notice a
difference in the loading time, hopefully.
Multiplayer updated
I have started to add information to the Playing
Multiplayer page. It covers both Kali and Modem to Modem play. If anyone
has any more information they feel would be useful to put on the page please could you send it in.
Quickie note
It seems that not only has the dexterity for the Barbarian changed but also the
strength. Sierra have taken max strength from 270 to 255. Not sure what
happens to saved character's strength now. - TeRR0RNauT
I've updated the relevant pages with this info.
Thursday 22 January 1998
Entering Demon Crypt
jman has forwarded on this piece on
Multiplayer games....
I don't know if anyone knows this but
with the Sierra patch and the multiplayer patch enabled, you don't need the cathedral map
to enter the crypts. You just have to walk up to the front of the grave like you normally
would in single player and you will go down.
Altering speech macros
Dunno if anyone's figured this out yet,
but to customize your speech macros as most of us did in the original Diablo, follow these
simple steps:
1. copy/paste the "diablo.ini"
file from your DIABLO directory to your HELLFIRE directory
2. rename it to "hellfire.ini"
3. open the file to alter the macros - Sky'ree+
Can you help?
I am currently trying to put together a page on playing Hellfire multiplayer and I
wondered if anyone knew information that would help people set up games either modem to
modem or over Kali. Anything you can share
would be appreciated as I've not attempted games using either of these so am not that
knowledgeable. You can see the link for this page above here, top left.
Pathetic effort at the moment but with some input I'm sure it can become a handy resource
for others. - Thanks, Elly
Barbarian Change
Chris Weber and Flux have both written in saying that the Barbarian's dexterity max has
now increased from 40 to 55. So it appears whilst the Babarian is not an officially
released character Sierra are still tweaking the character - which is nice for us. I've
updated the appropriate sections with this information.
Character File
Ostar chien has sent in a character file he describes as Queenbow Rogue's brother Royal
Monk. You can find both these characters in the files
page under 'character files'. As much as I'd love to have a huge files section with
oodles of stuff on it unfortunately I can not accept any more character files. I
simply do not have the space or bandwidth at this time for these. There is a fair
selection already on the files section which TeRR0RNauT has kindly stored on his server,
most of which were created by himself.
Wednesday 21 January 1998
Official Patch Beta 2 soon
This sent in by Chris informing us:
"The testing period for the Hellfire
BETA patch is complete and it has been removed from the server. It is no longer available
through Sierra On-Line.
Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the patch. There will be a new BETA available for
testing sometime in the near future. Another announcement will be made on this board when
it is ready. -Sierra Webmaster"
Thanks to Chris for passing this on to us
all.
Nitrokid has also sent in word of what
the beta patch 2 fixes:
"This second beta patch is designed
to correct several random crashes, as well as other random anomalies. Please see the
readme (PATCH.TXT) for specific issues corrected. This patch should also be compatible
with the European version of Hellfire, and the MSVCRT.DLL error is no longer generated.
To verify that the game has been updated, go to START, the RUN and type NOTEPAD
C:\SIERRA\HELLFIRE\VERSION and press enter. Text displaying the version number will
appear. (Note: If you have installed to a custom directory or drive other than C:, you
must adjust the path.)
If the patches causes any problems in the game, or you find that it did not correct the
issues listed in PATCH.TXT, please drop us a line at beta.test@sierra.com.
We cannot supply technical support for a beta patch, nor will we be able to respond
to every email, but any information we receive will be very valuable in the evaluation of
this beta patch. - Sierra"
Download Beta 2 - {note: It is the same name as beta
1}
As yet we don't think there is anything new added by installing the patch character
wise, just general bug fixes. Nitrokid has also sent and updated version of his
hellfrui file for multiplayer capability and you can grab this here.
The Patch V1.01(beta) details page has
also been updated.
Monster changes
- Flux has sent in the stats for monsters on
Hell/Hell and it appears that the HP's displayed for this difficulty setting have been
reduced by 100. The actual Hit Points are the same, the patch has fixed a bug which
caused the stats to be displayed as + 100 to what they actually were. Not sure if
I've explained that terribly clearly. It has also changed some of the regular monsters
stats {from Hell/Hell Diablo} so I have
updated the Diablo site's monster pages also.
New AVI
This just in from Flux...
A new avi has appeared from Sierra. It's
8megs, and I grabbed it in about 2 minutes with my cable modem, but I must warn anyone
else off. It is about 1 minute long, in game footage of a low-medium level monk wandering
around the hive, sort of randomly attacking stuff. Then about 15 seconds of a rogue with 2
of the new bows, (the triple shot one and then Blitzen) and she is in the cats and then
the caves, shooting randomly with Blitzen and almost dying. Then there's about 15 more
seconds of the Monk in the Hive, again playing very randomly. - Flux
Thanks to Flux for passing this along and
you can download here.
Please also note that this file is
pulling directly off Sierra's server not mine so if you are having problems connecting
please do not mail me asking me to email you it as I didn't bother downloading it myself.
I did however start a download to test the link was working okay. Thanks - Elly
New stats
DroolMAN! sent along a pic of the Bovine Plate which amongst other things has a stat of +0
mana. Sky'ree+ had reported a stat of -50 to mana. DroolMAN! found the
plate after installing the patch as did Sky'ree+ so I wonder what is happening here.
Anyone any ideas?
DroolMAN! also sent in some observations on monsters after installing the patch...
"I am playing a level 45 warrior and
after putting the patch on, those monsters in Hell/Hell are sure damn resilient. Dunno
whether if it is just my character's level making the game tough or the patch. One thing
is for sure, some of the creatures' stats have changed and are now harder to kill, most
notably The Reaper and Flesh Thing."
If this is the case then the Stats on the
monsters page for Hell are incorrect. So if anyone manages to grab some screenshots of the
stats please send them along so I can correct the page. Thanks - Elly

Character Files
TeRR0RNauT has sent along details of
three legit characters for download
1. A good warrior {4mb} - download
2. A butt kicking Bard {4mb} - download
3. Conan - Barbarian{1mb} - download
He is kindly allowing me to have these
download from his server which has a faster line than mine. Many thanks to him for
that. I have added these to the files page also.
We did some more work on the server this evening, upgrading the hardware so you may have
experienced some problems connecting to the site as it was turned off.
New official patch?
There is a new 'official' patch going
around the net. I downloaded this and unzipped it and all that it consists of is the
official patch, command.txt file and the hellfrui-1 file. Basically the files we've
all had for the past five days so just to let you know not to bother downloading it as
you've already got it. Thanks to Curtis Johnson for bringing this to our attention.
Conan Take Two
Rob has sent along his beefed up bully boy, Conan. He's on the 3rd Crypt level. He's
got pretty good stats, even magic, and some tasty equipment, which I'm assured is all
legit. You can find Conan lurking in the Files
section.
Rage quirk?
This new Rage quirk from Clement Lai....
Cast rage, then open a portal to go up to
town. Go back down to the dungeon thru the portal and the effects of the rage won't go
away.(You can't cast another rage though) The effects remain until you start a new game.
Top Three movers & groovers
The top three uniques have had a shift with Gnatsting being knocked off third place by the
Blitzen bow. Seems like normal difficutly games are producing more uniques than any
other settings. This might change of course when more of use reach Hell difficulty
games.....
1. Gladiator's Ring = 21, Best level Hell, Normal difficulty
2. Acolytes Amulet = 16, Best level Hive, Normal difficulty
3. Blitzen Bow = 9, Best level Hell, Normal difficulty
