his document,
showing a number of unused spells from early versions of Diablo, was compiled by Ed, a site reader. Thanks to him for the great work. His words
follow, with only a couple of notes by myself at the end.
Complete
guide to the hidden spells of Diablo and Hellfire
I was sick of all the crap people made up when they saw an unidentified
spell icon so I did some research on my own and found the truth to the hidden spells.
(NOTE: in beta version, Diablo had 6 spell books... even look in your
Diablo manual on page #18: "using spells and skills".... there's a picture with
the spell book open and 1..2..3..4..5..6..? yes, 6 books.
I'll write two values with a dash
in between, the first is the book in which the spell appears in and the second is the slot
the spell appears in, There are 5 books in diablo and 7 slots... Not 4 books, 5, and the
fifth book is not completely disabled either.)
|
Etherealize - (Page 4, 7th slot down.)
Can be re-enabled, intact in the d1.07 code, as with all other
available versions.
Proof: has been hacked and continues to be hacked into staves
and scrolls although books are useless since it cannot appear in the spell book. Wonder
when blizzard will disable it? (hate cheaters)
what it does: a silver ring appears over a player's head...
supposedly like mana shield but absorbs physical damage... lasting is time-based.
Reason for removal: balance (immunity)
Graphics for this spell shown below. (The circle fits
perfectly around mana shield. |
|
Blood Boil - (Page 5)
Used like apocalypse, for a brief period (comparative to
length of time fire walls last) any monster or (pvp on) player that comes into the squares
adjacent to the person who cast the spell will explode.
Fire based to my
knowledge.
Spell icon intact, code removed, graphics removed.
Proof: beta version.
Reason for removal: unknown.
This icon was reused in Hellfire for the skill rage. |
|
Blood Ritual - (Page 5)
Kinda like reversed healing, hp into mana.
Magic based (like healing).
Spell icon intact, code removed, graphics removed.
Proof: beta.
Reason for
removal: let's see the ratio of healing is something like 3:2 (hp:mana) so if you had an
alternate spell with the ratio 2:3 then you would end up increasing both life and mana and
end up INVICIBLE!
Probable
debug: have reverse efficiency for blood ritual. |
|
Doom Serpents - (Page 5)
Think of
"poison bolt" kills animals, not demons, not undead.
Special base
(like holybolt).
Spell icon
intact-- guardian icon! code removed, graphics INTACT!!
Proof: beta.
Reason for
removal: holybolt and doomserpent... pick. (there are more animals then undead monsters).

Invisibility - (Page Five)
Duhhh? what
does this do??
Magic based.
Spell icon
intact, code removed, graphics?? Gee I wonder what I look like when I'm invisible.
Proof:
beta.
Reason for
removal: unknown. |
|
Sentinel - (Page Five)
A
big eyeball appears (in the style of golem) and fires streaks of fire (in the style of
guardian).
Fire based.
Spell icon
REMOVED, code REMOVED, graphics, some left... I can't remember what directory but in
Diablodat.MPQ there were several files named "flame" or "newexp"
(.cl2).
Proof: beta.
Reason for
removal: humm, you have golem and you have guardian... if you also had this, there is no
point of having all three and who would choose a still shooter over a moving shooter or a
combat attacker to a ranged attacker? |
|
Runes - (Hellfire only)
Runes are
actually SPELLS that can be hacked into scrolls and staves. That's why.
"READING"
a rune is like "READING" a scroll.
Proof:
I tried it but deleted the *.hif files after the experiment. |

Hard
core pre-alpha icons!!!
Apparently
these were just preliminaries with no real purpose or name: |
All the above info was sent in by Ed, and the words are all his.
In my opinion,
these are the spells that were left the closest to functional. Obviously Blizzard
had quite a few spells in mind that didn't make the cut, with a potentially six-page spell
book, so I would guess that there are quite a few other things that didn't get left on the
Diablo cd. One interesting thing to note is that the icon for Invisibility is in a
Diablo II screenshot from the Sorceress' Lightning Skill Tree. You can see it here, 3rd pic down the
page.
So does this
mean the Sorceress will have invisibility? It's a possibility, but remember that her
skill trees and icons are still very much subject to change, so they could just be using
that icon as a place holder for now, or they might be using that icon but for a different
spell.
