No World of Warcraft Annual Pass for Reaper of Souls

Tom Chilton

Speaking at BlizzCon today, World of Warcraft Game Director Tom Chilton was asked if there would be another World of Warcraft Annual Pass.

Prior to the release of Diablo 3, if you purchased an annual pass for World of Warcraft you also received Diablo 3 for free when it launched.

However it doesn’t look like that will happen for the Reaper of Souls expansion. Tom explained:

“We don’t currently plan to do another annual pass. It’s something that made sense at the time when we had a really compelling offer like the free Diablo 3.

Some players have suggested that maybe we do it with the Diablo 3 expansion. We don’t think that’s compelling as the original shipping game was because no matter who you were, even if you hadn’t played the previous Diablos, Diablo 3 was still relevant to you. Whereas eight now with an expansion that feels less so. NO plans to do that right now.”

When Diablo 3 launched the primary goal will have been to bring as many new players to the Diablo franchise as possible so it made sense to entice World of Warcraft players into Sanctuary for free.

It’s apparent that many of the players that joined Diablo 3 through the annual pass may have only played through the game once then put it down and gone back to World of Warcraft when new content was added to the MMO. Diablo 3 player numbers then dropped and levelled out.

The decision to not launch another annual pass will also likely be down to the fact and another full blown WoW expansion has now been announced.

Do you think this is the right move?

  1. The problem is that people will just play WoW, b/c the changes in that expansion look phenomenal. Except the time travel stuff. That’s just stupid.

  2. Right move indeed. WoW people do not care about Diablo 100%, so my logic is this: Slim interest, why bother?

  3. Diablo3 was never free for the WoW players, stupied kids who cant think with brain hahaha.. Diablo3 was free when you pay WoW for 1 year ? that is not free not all. When something is free you get it free like path of exile you need to open you wallet.

    • We are considering a population of wow players that would of paid for that year of playing regardless of if Diablo 3 made that initial year pass or not.

This is the group that blizzard wanted to target to get into the game.

  4. They are already making 2 “free” games, HoS and Hearthstone.

Doesn’t make sense any sense to get people into D3X!
Specially now that it doesn’t have p2w/milk_the_player features such as the “free” games. Aka no AH.

  5. This makes no sense. Give me RoS for free!

Disagree. I am a WoW player, I have my subscription on an annual basis. I would have paid for a full year regardless of D3 being offered for free. I paid the same price for my annual sub that year as I did the previous year, but in that year, I got D3 as an added bonus, D3 was free.

I wish ROS was free, but from a business standpoint they are making the right move. Loot 2.0 will be free, but people will really want to play the Crusdaer, and will want Act 5 as well as the new features.

On the other side, maybe they should give a free offer because of how bad D3 has been or at least is up until loot 2.0 hits.

  7. I think they just did it the first time because of the hype that Star Wars the Old Republic was getting right after Blizzcon and wanted to keep as many subscribers as they could through that time. Too bad they couldn’t predict that SWTOR was going to be a shit game.

Not sure how you make that leap of logic. I play both and am very interested in both. I do not think I am not the only one who does.

  9. The timing doesn’t work either. Back when the D3 annual pass thing was announced WoW was in a big lull time with no expansion news coming up, and Diablo 3 apparently on the horizon. So the theory seemed to be that WoW players would pay 12m when they might otherwise have taken a break, they’d get D3 when it came out while still paying for WoW, and after a few months of D3 the next WoW expansion would hit and they’d be sucked back into that right around the time their pre-paid 12m ended.

That timing didn’t work out exactly since D3 got delayed, and there’s no such confluence of timing at this point anyway. Not to mention much less general anticipation for D3X than there was for D3 back in 2011.
