Diablo Comic: Welcome Back the Old Flame

The extremely positive reception of D3v2 has caused a ripple down effect, as disappointed Diablo 3 players who had been turning to other games, perhaps other ARPGs, are returning to D3 in droves, with Reaper of Souls just around the corner. That’s the theme Nerf Now comic, which you can see below.

I thought this was a well done Diablo comic, with a cleverly-funny and slightly-biting punchline. Also, bonus points for rendering a female Diablo who is actually quite cute. Leah’s influence coming through, there?

  1. The PoE Sacrifice of the Vail ad just beside this news adds fun to it.

    • Any publicity is good publicity? Obviously everyone doesn’t have the same opinion on PoE vs. D3v2, and I’ve been told that some people can play more than one video game at a time.

  2. I’ve been generally very dismissive of D3 shortly after the release, the game was crap and should not have been sold for 60 EUR at the time.

However, with all the changes, albeit way slower than expaected and desired by the fans who got royal shitty treatement, the game improved.

I gotta say that this D3v2 is a lot of fun. I ve been playing 2h daily on T2 and usually get 3 to 5 legs some of which are really cool, and some of my gear is already improved (i’ve played MP 7 before).

My fav is the nemesis bracers – the possesion of which i announce at the beginning of play session and ask for courtesy of discharging shrines, oh boy sure seeing a shire gives excite now!~11

the fights with elites take a while now and i’ve noticed myself playing with tactical moves, i approve!

at the beginning i was sad of the WotB nerf, as indeed barb felt sluggish and slow, but this impression is now gone and i love my CotA, earthquake and WotB MAX fury build, plus I use this skill where the party run speed in greatly increased for 3 sec, and playing D3 has never been more fun!

many orange items still need work as are very generic – i feel mostly chest armor, but the game is now a blast – and got excite for RoS whereas prior to D3v2 i did not and decleared not buing it until after release, that has changed

  3. Diablo 3 v2 is a game that Diablo 3 should have been two years ago. Well, at least they got right before release of EXP.

  4. in droves? care to link to official numbers that back that statement up? we will see if that is right when/if blizzard decides to show active player numbers again.

also, i assume most of the people coming back to the game don’t know what is waiting for them, aka no trading, still no pvp, still no real character development, still bad itemization, etc.

ros will merely be a small peak in the ever declining active player line that diverges towards zero. in half a year, the game will be used up, literally, like flavor gone out of a juiciy fruit gum, and then not even the strategy of band-aiding it, as employed since 2 years by the devs, will help anymore.

  5. funny thing is PoE is and have always been free.

I still feel bad for buying D3 collectors edition form almost 150$.

I appreciate the laugh. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the age-old hater diatribe.

The community, in large numbers, fell out of love with Diablo 3. Many didn’t and they stuck with it, made the best of it but probably didn’t play as much as they (and the devs) hoped they would. Then came RoS information, beta and ptr and new life for Diablo 3. Such is the legacy of the Diablo franchise there are lots of people willing to give it a second look and as patch 2.0.1 is free there is nothing to lose but a few hours of testing the waters. RoS is an expansion on that game (What is and is not in Reaper of Souls)

You’ve been saying that since not long after release in Mid 2012. Saying it doesn’t make it so. But if, in six months time, the D3/RoS servers are down to zero population you can feel satisfied that in just 2.5 short years your prediction came true and it was worth stalking this site to witness it. If that isn’t the case well you’ve just spent 2.5 years pissing into the wind my friend.

RoS remains the only Blizzard game to never break into the top 30 preorders:

Seriously doubt that means next year the servers will be down, but that’s a really bad showing for a Blizzard game, and an even worse showing considering it’s the XPac to the best selling PC game of all time. Still 2 weeks to at least make the list though! Also, actual release day sales may be oddly skewed in greater numbers than the pre-orders were, but that’s usually not what happens. For all we know RoS might tank on pre-sales but shoot to #1 in terms of actual launch day sales.

  10. There’s something very alternate reality type of bizarre to read a comic that actually makes a joke about how good D3 is.

I don’t doubt for a second that there are vastly less players now than at launch. I’m debating the notion that D3 will completely die. Not to mention pointing out the hypocrisy in demanding evidence before throwing out conjecture.

    • The x-pac is overpriced, if you ask me. D3 Vanilla has tought most of us not to expect the everlasting appeal D3’s predecessors had. What you can expect is well executed game with good look and feel which entertains for 10-20 hours. I’d pay 20€ for that, for good old times sake, but never 40. I could get some other well done FULL GAME for 40€.

Dont’ knock pissing into the wind. As long as you’re not pissing on yourself, it can be great fun.

    P.S. Just because I said this, don’t think I have experience. I don’t.

  13. In this strip, i miss the prestory to this date, where Diablo sends selftaken pictures of her, sucking on a banana, awkwardly winking. Also, she pays the bill.

  14. The cartoon is really funny. But I think for the time being I´ll stay with Path of Exile.
I admit that the developers of RoS did a great Job and I´m sure I´ll give it a try sooner or later.
But right now I´m not willing to pay so much money for an expansion pack to a game that was such a big disappointment to me. Especially since I am so happy with PoE and the latest mini expansion.

The article belonging to the cartoon on Nerf Now however made me angry because the author implies that there is no way to avoid ninja-looting in PoE.
But the creator of a game decides if loot is allocated to players (temporarily or permanently) or free for all to grab. And everybody can see which method has been chosen before joining.
It is true that the developers are fans of a ruthless style of playing. But they are wise enough to give their customers what these want instead of telling them how the game is meant to be played as Blizzard did with D3 for such a long time.
